I posted this on the bird board and am surprised at some of the responses. Curious what you guys think:

Just curious what others deem appropriate driving etiquette.

Say you are cruising along in the left lane about 80 in a 65 and passing all the cars in the right lane.
Somebody gets on your bumper and tries to push you or persuade you to get out of their way.

Do you:
Speed up?
Slow down to change lanes so he can pass?
Ignore him?

If you ignore him, how about when you get to a big brake in right lane traffic?
Do you:
Move over and let him go?
Ignore him and let him go around you?

1ST of all the 80 mph car is driving @ illegal speeds so there is no reason one should be a self appointed road moniter. An alert driver (as one should be @ 80mph) should notice said butthead approaching in time to either move or what ever would be appropiate.

I would move out of the way when safe. The outside lane is more or less designated for getting vehicles by, thats why h.d. trucks don't block use them. What if the "A"hole in back has a wife about to give birth etc...?

Just my 02c from many years of Ca. commuting

Move over when possible and let them by.

Besides, if they came up on you there is a good chance they are not sober (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) Get out of their way and let them stay away from you.

Get out of the way. You don't want slower cars holding you up so don't do it to faster cars either.

Some freeways around here 80 is average. Stay in your lane.

I doubt my 1.7 will go 80.... don't think I'll have that problem. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

In the Mustang, I eventually move over and let em go. It rarely happens, but when they get pulled over a mile up the road, I get to laugh my ass off!

I drive a 1 ton work van. No matter what lane I'm in someone is always tailgating me. When I get in one of my Supreme Commander moods I just roll down the window and give 'em a Texas Shower; i.e., spray a good healthy stream of WD-40 out the window. They think it's WW washer fluid and kick on their wipers. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/happy11.gif) I love to watch people driving with their heads hanging out the window. Simple, i don't even wait until they are burning holes in my bumper. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

Since i was raised to pay attention when i drive, i will see them coming up on me and simply move out of the way, let them pass and then depending on traffic (or lack thereof) move back to the left lane (or not).

Get right and let them by. In most states, the "slower traffic keep right" & speed limit are completely separate laws. So you might be speeding, he/she might be tailgating & speeding, but the law still says you should yield the passing lane to faster traffic.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) German rules may not be the law here, but they are a good guideline for courteous driving IMO.

I agree with most of you, and in fact I will move over AFTER I pass the slower traffic. Most on the bird board think you should slow down and move over right away, and one is arrogant if they dont.

i agree with the previaling "let 'em by" opinions. will add that an acquaintence once speed up to crazy speeds and ended up getting busted. the tailgater was an undercover!
