Porsche won't allow the Cayman to be the performance car that it can be, because it would be better than the 911. So it won't happen, and therefore, it won't sell well.

If I were buying a new Porsche, I'd be looking at the Cayman. But that's the problem, I'm not looking at buying new. And I'm worried that they think a $52k car is going to attract "younger customers." How young do you think they're going to be while having that kind of money to throw around? Or is that more a reflection of just how far the 911 customer demographic has shifted into the retirement bracket?

The Boxster is even cheaper and has the fun-car, drop-top image. The 911 is carefully kept in the prestige position. And they're surprised when the Cayman doesn't sell well? Maybe if they'd race it, so the world actually knew that the model had something to offer... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mad.gif)

I like the Cayman. In fact, my next "newer" Porsche will probably be an S model. As others have said, Porsche will never let it outshine its more expensive older brother.

I suppose this is just a common problem with "entry level" Porsches.

I really like the Cayman and would be the one I would buy if I was replacing my Corvette. It would definitely out perform the 911 if allowed to be developed to its full potential.

The Boxster is better than most cars but I would probably purchase another Corvette.

I really like the looks and the handling of the Cayman.

I like the Cayman. I don't like the name. Or the script. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/pinch.gif)

I donno - the 924->944->968 line sold pretty well.
I think it's a problem with mid-engine Porsches, and Porsche's insistance that the 911 be the flagship.
Of course they have no concerns that the 918 outperforms the current '911' - at a million bucks a copy (but not many copies) it still represents a fraction of the 911's revenue.

The Cayman is one of the better driving cars Porsche produces, in my opinion of course. They didn't build any of them last year as they were gearing up for the new Boxster. The Cayman is slated to go on sale in April I believe. I'm sure we will sell everyone on the lot as soon as they come off the truck.

The launch of the new Cayman this year will make sales skyrocket like the new Boxster did. IMHO
I have seen a couple of '06-'07 Cayman S' for mid $20's. That is a smoking deal for a very competent track car. Just remember to add an Accusump for the pre DI cars.

This surprises me. I see them all over the place around here. I hated the Boxters look frm the day it came out, and was REALLY dissapointed with the route Porsche had been going, between the Cayenne, and the newer Ricer looking 911. They seemed to be getting away from the real sports car market, and going for the status oriented, " look at me " market. When the Caymen came out, I was all over it. I'd LOVE to be able to afford one, and if the time ever comes that I can, I will (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) . Great lines, great handling (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif)

I sell Porsches...

They havent produced a cayman in 10 months... so if they are judging by monthly sales that is your answer. They always starve the market before releasing a new one.

bill and i were just talking about this, and both agreed the new cayman is well done- like scottyb i cant afford one but, like my 2000 boxster, i will wait for a few years and let someone else take the depreciation hit! But it is a shame that porsche has such a great car and is afraid to maximize its potential! maybe they should have used this design and called it the new re-designed 911 if its that much better in handling, and potentially performance etc,

IMHO which means nothing, Porsche doesn't need to try and compete in every model market. The cayman is a nice looking car but for the price I'm buying a used 911. The boxster ??? My daughter pointed to one and said what a cute little convertible beetle. The Panamera hurts my eyes.

The move towards rice must be driving sales? Time will tell! I have owned three corvettes, the new one (IMG:style_emoticons/default/barf.gif) ...rice, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

To my eyes the Cayman is the most beautiful car Porsche has built since the 904. Regardless of whether we can turn them into a race cars it's a shame to hear Porsche officials state with authority that it's NOT a race car. Even if it's so as it comes from the factory (no bosses welded in for harnesses etc.).

Still, the older Porsche family members said with certainty, and enjoyed the fact, that they expected their cars to be modified by owners to do just that so... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

I'd buy one in a heartbeat if I wasn't still paying off a ex wife. IMO it as what a modern 914 would look like. The lines on the new model are much better looking than the current 911 and even have a bit of styling from the Carrera GT. I doubt if I would ever buy a new one. I am too cheap but a 5 year old with super low miles would be one that would get me curious!
