Hi All,
Looks like I need to replace the CV's on my '74 2.0. I can slide both axles easily from side to side creating the banging noise I was trying to diagnose. I can get two new axle assemblies from Porsche for about $575 with shipping or I can get a set of these from Racer Chris for about $500 ... New Lobro German Type 1 CV Joints adapted for use in 914 rear axle assemblies. Are the Lebro's any better than the original CV joints? COst between the two is close enough that I will go with whatever is better. If the same, I will just get the new ones as there is less to take apart. Thx. Mike |

If it were me, I'd pop for the extra $75 each for the full assembly all new, but save your old ones for parts in the future.
The original Porsche Type IV's CVs on the 914 were much stronger then the T-1 CVs, which is why Chris is modifying them, but I thought the "real" 914 CVs were NLA, but if the Porsche ones from the dealer are original Porsche parts or the substituted ones, then they'll be the stronger ones & IIRC they are also used on that period 911/912 too. Verify that they are selling you the genuine Porsche parts (axle+CVs). Rich Bontempi has the Porsche replacement part # 914 CV/axle assemblies, which he said had different splines than the originals, so you can't mix & match old with new. My mechanic of 40+ years now, who was a Porsche dealer 914 Tech (one of the first) always recco's the Porsche CVs over the Bug Type I CVs cuz they blow out with the greater TQ of the 914 motors, therefore Chris' upgrade/reinforcement. I can't speak for Chris's mods, but you'd still be mixing in new with 40+/- year old & stressed/aged parts if you go for the $500 CV only route. That's my 2 cents. Good Luck! Thanks Tom. Just ordered the new ones. Of course they could call me and say they are NLA ...

Porsche had the axles made up. GKN/Lobo has gotten away from selling parts and making only assemblies. Complete axles are selling for what the CV's last price depending on where you shop.

You can at least see if any of your CV's are serviceable.
Take them apart and run your finger through the outer part bearing groove, if there's a wear divot they're junk. No divot and they can likely be serviced. |

I'm in the same boat, and I'm really confused.
I've got a couple of split boots, so I figured I'd replace those and repack the existing CV joints. When I got them apart, though, I'm seeing wear on the surfaces I don't like. If I can feel the indentation with my finger, that's too much in my mind. When I look at replacement CV joints, though, it looks like some places want to sell me the bug joints, and some the 914-6 joints (like the link above from amphicar770). Would a 914-6 half shaft fit a -4 application? Is a lowly 1.7L really going to break a Type 1 CV? Gary |

Of course, then if you need to buy a new joint in the future, the Type 1 will not work with your 'new' setup. You would need to get your old axle back. |

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) Tom /////// I am not aware of any strength differences (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) They are basically the same size, but the 914 uses 2 roll-pins, so 2 holes are bored out. And the gasket groove is machined. |

Just buy new axle assemblies and get the Porsche warranty.

Not a bad idea to flip 'em if you do re-use them.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) .....so how much side-to-side is ok before it is not?? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/popcorn[1].gif) On most vehicles the rule of thumb is less than 1/8". You certainly should not be moving them enough to get a metal on metal clang when they stop! |

Looks like the new complete axles are indeed, available. Just got my "order shipped" notice from Jim Ellis Porsche. PP needs to start listing these as other then NLA.

New axles came in. Looks like they are indeed made in Germany, not China.

Can you show a side by side picture of a new joint next to an old one?
I wonder if they happen to be stronger/larger than old stock joints |

Sage info again Mark, have repacked so many my head spins, found 95% are reusable and the rest are heat marked or galled out,and I must say my experience isn't 914 but many other german cars...makes little difference really. New boots and grease are cheap afterall, note I don't pull them apart just clean them and reassemble, its a time thing not a big money job. |
