Does anyone have any experience with an Alfa Romeo alfasud?
Horizontal 4 banger, water cooled.....looks nice. The transmission is what interested me. Built with inboard disk brakes mounted on the transaxle... It's one of the wheeler dealer shows on tonight. I really like the brake setup, looks a lot like ours with a mechanical ebrake on the calipers too. |

There is a similar setup on the Alfetta and Alfetta Sedans I'm not sure if the newer Alfasuds were the same brakes but the Alfettas had some decent brakes. |

After googling a photo of the transaxle that looks almost identical to the Alfetta the difference being they ran a shaft that turned at engine speed from the front of the car to the trans-axle in the back ala 924/944. |

I really like the brake setup, looks a lot like ours with a mechanical ebrake on the calipers too. I had one and I rebuilt it from ground up. The brakes on the transmission help the stability a lot. I had an AlfaSud Sprint with brakes on the gearbox and my friend had a newer model that used the Alfa 33 brakes assembly in the traditional place, on the wheels. Mine handled a lot better. The only bad part is that it eats more axles due to braking power being transmitted through then. BTW, the AlfaSud was concepted by a high executive that left Porsche and joined Alfa. I could see a lot if similarities. |

...and they eventually used that base motor to make a 1.7 16v version that made what 130hp? That would have been a blast in a 914.

That is one funky suspension!!
Not a big fan of any DeDion setup, personally. Looks like they could have gone to a nice full-independent setup with just a little more work. Less unsprung weight, better compliance over bumps... --DD |

Yes, not a fan of the suspension.
Wonder what could be done with that tranny? How much power could it handle? |

The whole package may be too long. Rear mounting point is high. Brake pads are a pain to change. My stock Alfetta brakes are great however. Typical 1st and 2nd gear sycros are usually gone.

Yes, not a fan of the suspension. Wonder what could be done with that tranny? How much power could it handle? The suspension on those cars is a dream. I don't know what you're complaining about. Regarding the gearbox, its a ZF, I don't know how much it can handle but in 3 years I had the car, I went through 3 gearbox rebuilds. The 2nd gear synchro is some kind of cheese. I may have a box still laying around across the pond in my dads storage if you must have one. If you want, I have the repair manual. There might be some good info in there. |
