depends on how scarred up the crank is. What does your rod knock sound like, does it get louder as you increase rpms, or does it only do it at idle.....

IMHO, if the rod is knocking, anything less than a rebuild is a "ptach"

Yes, it's rebuild time. If it's really a rod and you can hear it the crank's already damaged and there's no other way to fix it. You might get lucky and have caught some kind of piston or valve faliure early on, meaning you wouldn't necessarily have to split the case, but you'd still be well advised to go ahead and do it all "while you're in there".
