Alright so now that I've made like 10 failed gaskets I'm kind of running out of ideas on how to make the dam thing. I've been making it a large diameter so that I can create the taper, but they just never seem to turn out right, always some sort of leak, so I'm turning to my favoriate bunch of guys, and gals for advice. How have you guys that have made them done it? What's the magic to getting the diameter and taper right? Tell me I can do it, I think I can I think I can ... There is a tapered gasket on the throttle body of my 86-91 Vanagons (2.1 liter)
Mebbe you could order one pf those , take a bite out of it to get the right diameter and then glue the ends together.. Ken |

That part # on the Bird comes up as NLA. The one for the 1.8 looks pretty close. I wonder if that would work...

Parts pricer is a program that was set up by a member and it allows you to check pricing and availability from 4 vendors (PP, AA, GPR & SG). It also lists items manufactured by others (most are found in the parts manufactured by members section of this board). (I'm at work or I'd post the link)
As it was posted in a earlier thread..... GPR and AA are shareing inventory. Which means if it is listed on either site you can get it from either source. |

Alright so today I called both auto atlanta and GPR who list the gasket as NLA. No big suprise to me, but It was intersting talking to both companies for the first time. Auto atlanta was actually pretty helpful, I got George HIMSELF (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif) to answer a question for me. He claims that the 1.8 throttle body gasket will fit if coaxed into the 1.7 space. Great (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smilie_pokal.gif). So I go to order it, but they have a $25.00 minimum order (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/dry.gif) . Scratch that, I'll order some where else thank you very much. Anyway I've got a 1.8 gasket in the garage ironically that I got from camp, so I'll try that. We'll see how this goes.
In the mean time, as a fail safe, does anyone have any experience actually making the gasket? I've been told by gary emory, and a couple of the california shops that this is the real way to go, but no instructions on how to do it (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/sad.gif) . Any advice? Eric |

The bus one is not even close. And the 1.8 is about the same. I wouldn't run it an expect it to work. Bruce, this is another part to add to your list of things to make. They've been NLA for awhile and the chances of finding a hidden stash is very very slim.

Jkelzer- I tried the rtv thing, but it didn't make a real good seal.
Mark- Yeah no kidding! It's such a struggle with this dam thing. I think I may have solved the leak well enough. Tonight I fired it up ( with a screwdriver, I feel so cool) and got it to idle at around 1200 rpm, which isn't ideal , but is much better than 2000 and it's static, and I think with timing it should be pretty close to a grand. We'll see right ? Eric, Oh, see my new thread, that is a wierd problem (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wacko.gif) |
