I have received a couple of e-mails asking me to confirm my Paypal account information for "security reasons". The links are spoofed to non Paypal websites.

The e-mails are addressed to Eastonfund@iepg.com. This is an e-mail that I specifically set up for this club and only advertised on this club.

There are a number of known viruses that scan your e-mail inbox for confirmations sent from Paypal. It sends an e-mail to the other party (in this case to me using the e-mail address I set up as Eastonfund@iepg.com).

So... I received contributions from 100+ people. One or more of you has a virus.

I would recommend to ALL of you to get a good antivirus program and check your system for spyware regularly. Programs like Adaware and Spybot are FREE.

Thanks!

Qarl

Just got the computer out of the shop a couple of weeks ago for annual clean up and all the latest stuff was installed. I think I'm ok but I'll run all the scans just in case!

I don't know who it is. I just posted this as a friendly warning.

Through deduction, I knew it had to be from somebody here.

Webroot makes a nice malicious spyware, trojan, cookie and pop up blocker. Which "I" pay for....Well worth it....

my company supplies me with a decent/good anti-virus program as well...doesn't do the deed on spayware and such.....

Be nice if they were combined. I have suggested it and next year we will be getting both.

The agency's philosophy is...an employee may spread a virus to the work computer and it's cheaper to protect than to fix....

okay here's the scoop( from hacker's point of view--i'm not a hacker)
M$ designs a Operating System with MANY MANY security flaws in it..

the MS people don't want to use funding to fix the problems when they come up, so the microsoft people simply ignore it.

it's like the apollo 13 mission.....same thing

but sometimes it takes viruses to explain to people that patching is required.

Now this is the point of view for "Good Hackers"

Bad ones are out there to take advantage of you

no that means that you know that viruses exist, so wrap your computer's tool by running the antivirus and doing spyware checks like your supposed to (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif)

Karl,

(IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/ohmy.gif) I too picked up a Trojan recently. I run a virus scan nightly before I shut down. Thanks for the heads up.

I recently started using a Registry Cleaner as well. Made a big difference in system speed.

Spyware removal programs are a must too. You'd be surprised how much crap you can accumulate if you aren't careful. Some stuff is pretty nasty too.

Since I've been using Norton 9.0 and 10.0 and Adaware at my company... no problems.

Education is also important. Teaching your family or employees what NOT to download and run really helps a lot.

Qarl

Just because two people found stuff on their PCs doesn't mean the 98+ remaining Paypal contributors are safe!

Who's next on the "Oops! I found a virus" bandwagon?

It's probably safe to assume that most people who don't scan regularly for spyware have it in one form or another.

Download Lavasoft Ad-Aware and Spybot Search and Destroy, both tools work well. Also make sure you have an antivirus program, MacAfee seems decent.

I think that the main problem is that nearly all new pc's come with Norton, or Mcaffee as a TRIAL. It's used as a selling point, but they fail to mention that after a few months it is worthless. Last week I cleaned my wife's bosse's computer because he "thought he had Norton"...

People forget about it. Too many other issues in life to worry about that. Understandable I guess. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/tongue.gif)

I've been getting the paypal 'phishing' scam emails for some time. If you posted the email address originally as you did here 'Eastonfund@iepg.com' than I'd say they picked it up off the board directly rather than you getting it from a club member's email. It's recommended to spell out an email address as 'eastonfund at iepg dot com' to reduce the chances of this happening.
