Have a 1973 914 that someone installed an electric rear trunk release. It was always a problem; you had to energize the solenoid by the pushbutton and while energized push down on the trunk lid. Now it does not operate at all; no sound from the solenoid when the pushbutton is depressed. Is there a way to open the rear trunk lid manually?

The old ratchet + lots of extensions should do the trick. Best done with a helper.

- Pop the top latch cups and push them inside the trunk
- Have a helper shine a flashlight trough one of the cup holes onto the rear latch assembly
- Get a ratchet and add enough extensions to get you through the other cup hole all the way back to the rear latch. You may want to use a swivel extension at the end.
- Undo the two bolts that hold the latch to the rear panel
- Done

I agree with John...but check to see if you have a blown fuse first (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif)

You should also check that the previous owner didn't already install a manual release cord. Can't find it immediately but this was in a previous thread along with pictures (I think) about where to locate this.

hold the lid down while someone pushes the button to see if it will spring then if not but power directly to the wire (should find it in the engine compartment). Usually it is because the hinge pivot bolts need lubrication and or the rear catch and latch need lubrication. If the plunger is not seated into the solenoid far enough, the electromagnet will not grab it. Other than that the easiest way is to drill a very small hold in the middle of the "S" and insert a welding rod to trip the lower catch

Before you starting cutting, drilling, etc, make sure you rule out all possible other options. Check for a blown fuse as others have stated. Make sure the car is running or the key is in the accessory position. Have someone push down while you press the button. Before I removed the solenoid and converted the car back to stock mine was very finicky and often required numerous attempts. Lots of frustration and rear deck lid smacking. Here's a previous thread on the subject. You might want to check my post #5 for a long term solution...
