I'm going to take a wild guess that the purists will say "On the underside"

(full disclosure- my car came with a hood badge and I have no plans to remove it (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) )

Just to stir the pot, this is from the 50 Years Porsche 914 book. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/stirthepot.gif)

QUOTE
"In addition, as well as this lettering on on the rear, it was decided to investigate whether the use of the Porsche crest on the front hood could be approved.

This proposal already appeared as a recommendation on the agenda of the 24th program committee meeting on 20 March [1970] and was now agreed. This solution did not last long however, as the two models were released to the world as VW-Porsche 914 and VW-Porsche 914/6 shortly before the IAA."

Mount it in the glovebox door and put a VW badge on the frunk between the headlights

Place the bottom tip of the badge 5 inches up from the front tip (dead center) of the hood. This placement is very aesthetic and looks right.

Ferry Porsche came to me in a dream and told me his only one regret in life was not putting a hood crest on the 914. So I'm keeping mine on.

Yes, as said by @yellowporky , if you must put a crest on the hood, remove the pins and use double stick emblem tape. Please do not drill any holes int he hood. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

It's your car.

I don't have one on mine, but do what you want.

Ansbacher gave the best answer. That spot looks good if you must do it.

Agree with NOT drilling holes in the hood.

Might as well stir the pot a little more..
AA replaced my front hood when they did work on my car some 30+ years ago (I had dinged it and it bent the cross supports. The replacement hood has 2 holes in it right about where the above mentioned placement should be. Just sayin'....

I've never installed a badge, but thought about it several times.

I think I heard this was also the dying wish of Ferdinand Piëch (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

I like the look of them placed so the bottom point of the crest intersects with a line drawn between the upper inner points of the headlight blinders. I believe that is about 4-3/4" up from the front point of the hood so just a scotch lower but put it where you like it.

For me, the badge thing is an interesting intersection of the NARP history. After reading the earlier mentioned book, it became clear to me that all of the injustices our cars have suffered over the years came from the dysfunctional marketing partnership between VW and Porsche rather than anything to do with engineering and design. I always embraced the dual VW-Porsche heritage but in reality, the 914 really is a Porsche. It was designed and engineered as a Porsche in fulfillment of Piëch's vision of what a true sports car should be. VW contribution to engineering was mostly to bring down costs and the Porsche design team rebelling where necessary like when VW wanted drum brakes at the rear to cut costs. When people say, "Porsche in name only," they really have it backwards.

The fact that the Porsche team had agreed to badge the car with a crest gives me a different perspective. I think the cars generally look better aesthetically with the crest but they also deserve it. At the same time, I love the red-headed stepchild NARP heritage and without it, I may never have been able to afford one.

I personally think badge or no badge honors the model equally so am agnostic. I do agree with not drilling the hood though. 3M Trim Tape will work just as well without molesting the car.

Two 914/8 models were built, each with the flat 8 engine used in the 908. One car was given to Ferry Porsche and is now in the Porsche museum.

It came with a hood crest. Do what you wish. You’ll be in good company.

It’s your car. Do as you like. 911SC is 3 3/8” to bottom. I don’t see them saying anything to people who cut giant holes in the middle of a hood for water pumping....
