If I recall, Rory had an issue with his car because there are different size shafts for early and late. I think it’s because the early cars used longer u joints. I think the 911 one is different as well.

If I recall, Rory had an issue with his car because there are different size shafts for early and late. I think it’s because the early cars used longer u joints. I think the 911 one is different as well. @Rgalla9146 Let me check what I have. What I remember is that there are two lengths for 4 cyl. cars. The shorter one is suitable for 6 cyl. cars. Please comment if know better. Mark....on your toes as usual ! |

Please comment if know better. Mark....on your toes as usual ! If the early fours and sixes used the longer U joints then the shorter rod makes sense. I just didn't piece it together until now. |

After plenty of disassembly of the newly assembled car I found the issue. There are two different length steering shafts, the longer one is 358mm and as I recall the shorter is ~352mm. Another difference is the shorter one has the recesses for the cinch bolt 'in line' On the longer shaft they are not in line I removed the long one, installed the shorter one...problem solved. The issue could have been from one, the other, or both differences. A load was bearing on the universal joints. Attached thumbnail(s) ![]() |
