Anybody (probably everybody) know what the average cost is to take a car and put it on a dyno. And what exactly can be told about the car other than hp figures?

Depending on what test equipment you have hooked up, anything you can imagine.. well.. depends on the type of dyno.

Mostly, you dial in your settings, you map things out across the throttle range, or troubleshoot a problem under load.

Some shops have very little, just a DynoJet style "inertia" dyno, which means you must accelerate to generate load (no holding the engine at X rpm to fiddle with something). These are good enough to satisfy your curiousity, and you can do some rough tuning on them.

These days, every shop should at the very least have a wideband O2 setup, since they're so cheap now. Hooked in properly, you should be able to get HP/torque v RPM and AFR v RPM. Some shops may be able to datalog other sensors, too, like engine temp, manifold pressure, etc.

Make sure the place has a big fan to blow into the nose of the car, to vaguely simulate airflow at speed.

Price can vary, but usually there's a per hour fee. I've seen $45 to $75. I'm sure there are cheaper and more expensive places.

We have a Dastek eddy current dyno..

you can do simple horsepower pulls, to show you the hp/torque graphs, we also record CO, A/F

With the Eddy current dyno we can also imitate real world operating conditions... we can dial load into the dyno, like if you were climbing a hill.

this allows us to map EFI systems more closely to real world situations than simple inertial dynos.

For example, we will run a car at 3000 rpm, no load, and correct the maps, then we will hold the car at 3500 no load, adjust the maps, then 3500 some load applied, adjust the maps, then 4000rpm adjust, and go through each rpm iteration untill we have a comprehensive map for the particular vehicle..

I think a dyno pull costs $75 at Bills place.. thats just set up and a baseline pull

Tim

I want to come to your place. Let's see 7000 miles round trip (just a guess) at $0.25 per mile equals $1750.00. Missed work roughly $10,000.00 (still have overhead). $11,750.00 plus a little play money $1500.00. Total = $13,250.00. Dyno time priceless. If I was close I would.

Get a group together, get a group price. Locally here in San Diego, Keith V. put together a dyno day at a local dyno shop for the RS America group. Cost $50 for the dyno, wasn't real fancy, hp, torque, a/f at different rpms, etc. But enough to give us a baseline, my hp went from 250 at the flywheel to 250 at the wheels after the recent engine work. Made me a happy guy.

After it was over, a few of us went for brunch, and compared notes, sheets, etc.

I think that there's enough guys around you to get a group together, I remember the engine lite off party. Give it a try. The brunch after was the most fun. Bunch of car nuts going over dyno sheets, questions, what improvement gave you what hp/torque, etc. Like moon-cutting the cylinders gave me a extra 8 hp over a engine without it, etc.

Yes organizing a dyno day with a club works very well..

Dave if you drove from Gig to NY, id put you up on the dyno gratis!!

that would be cool!!!

Tim, it would be cool. It ain't gonna happen. I'm a self employed small business person. No real complaints cause I get along with the boss but, the benefits suck. The last 2 week vacation I had was 1988. It would be fun though. I toyed with trying to drive to the Fall folliage festival and meeting my wife in Michigan (she grew up there). But, 3000 miles by myself with the northern Rockies in the fall and I chickened out. So, the teener will stick to left coast.

I just spent from 7:30am..... to 5pm today in AJRS doing dyno work..
got the carbs close... need one more set of E-tubes.

did 12 runs with jetting changes between each one..
did a couple tiny other things like welding in a bung for the 6-wire O2 sensor.

paid 175$/hour for the runs and for the tuning from allen Johnsen...

however he only chaged time for the actual runs so even though I was there for 8.5 hours is was pretty reasonable.

I'll start a different thread.
