New member here with my first 914.
I just picked up a neighbors 1974 914 2.0 that has been sitting since a left front accident in 1995. Remarkably good shape, otherwise.. It was stored in a garage from 1995-2019, covered in front of garage next to my place since then. I bought it from the family after he passed. I entered the VIN knowing it was near the end of 1974 production. Build date of 8/74. Website says it is out of range for this model year. I’ve found at least 3 different references stating ending VIN is 21370, and at least 3 state last VIN is 21379. This car is unequivocally 21378. All documents and 3 clear VINs match. Which would make this the 2nd to the last 1974 made if I go by the second source. Any thoughts? Is this the norm for other years. No big deal, just somewhat interesting to me. Thanks Brian S. |

It would seem you’ve helped validate the 21379 VIN#. Congratulations on getting such a special 914, although, they’re all pretty special. There’s something to be aware of: (IMG:style_emoticons/default/thisthreadisworthlesswithoutpics.gif) |

You should send pictures of the vin so that Sir Andy can update the vin range. You appear to have the last surviving 1974.

The beginning and end of year are always interesting. Published literature of the VIN ranges can be deceiving, and I do like to verify. I am very glad to see the new owner bring this up. One odd thing is that he claims the completion date is 08/74 when I do have claims of 1975 models with 07/74 I would certainly like photos of any compliance decals from this model year change. Brian, please contact me. Dave
![]() BTW, and very odd situation I discovered was with the 1971 911S coupe that has a hole of over 200 cars missing in the range in the middle of the year, and the number of engines produced support the existence of this hole. I even have a photo of the production page showing the gap. |

28 2 95 10
28 Week 2nd day 10th car that day Not sure if the weeks started counting with Sunday or Monday, if Monday that would mean the car was built July 9th 1974 at Karmann. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif) |

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif) My early 74 was built on 38 1 95 67 So I would assume 1 = Monday in my case Monday 9/17 (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) |

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif) So help me understand. How do you get 28 2 95 10 from the VIN 472921378 Also, I'm assuming that MY's changed in August since my car is a 75' and was manufactured 8/74. |

Very strange. I always assumed 914s produced in August (after the summer hiatus and re-tool at the factory, were for the following model year. My '74 is dated 8/73 and follows suit. Guess this is a unicorn. Or is something stamped wrong on the VIN label?

Oh this is interesting. Check out recall campaign HC here: https://bowlsby.net/914/Classic/Recalls.htm @davep Good find on incorrect label recall. Also notice that recall HO shows 1974 VIN ends at 21379. More evidence that VIN ending in 21370 is incorrect. Thanks BrianS |

Note that all of the 1974 model year cars have weeks up to 28 but the 1975 model year have weeks starting 32, so there was a month long gap in chassis production, but not necessarily the final assembly. Yes, the HC campaign was to replace incorrectly dated compliance decals, but this is a known hiccup regarding the dates. Notice the HO campaign has the correct VIN ranges for all years. |

Notice the HO campaign has the correct VIN ranges for all years. Not exactly ... HO - Lists the end of 75 as 74 9F - List the /6 range to start at 11, while 9K starts at 1 (and some people argue there were no cars prior to 11) 9J - The 2nd /4 has a missing 0 (IMG:style_emoticons/default/shades.gif) |
