Going to try and clean up these CV joints on my car, but couldn't remove them. Banged on them for a bit, watched a couple of videos (where the people in them just slid them off), and still cant remove my CV joints from the trailing arms.

I found this older thread (http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?sho...50813&st=0)

But the washer is attached to the side and I was wondering what I should do
Thanks!

Hi Frances!

Do you have a pic of the outside (opposite) end?

There is a snap ring in this end you have to remove. I didn't get the best photo with my phone but I believe the snap ring has slightly pointed ends they will help hold the snap rings tool as you spread it. It sometimes takes a couple whacks to loosen it from the groove. It's tight.

@TINKERGINEERING

Have you removed the clip on the other side of the CV?
You you have a press? If so you can support the inner race and press the axle out of the CV.
If not it can be done with a vice with the jaws supporting the inner race. Do not strike the axle directly with a hammer as you can damage the splines. Use either a steel plate or a second ball pean hammer against the axle and strike the second hammer with the first. The round ball of the hammer will center in the axle.

I will look around in the shop to see if that would be possible and try it out! Thanks for the feedback!

Hydraulic press.

Long before I had a press of my own, I would take parts to the local garage / machine shop. They would do it for just a couple bucks, sometimes free if it was super quick for them and/or maybe I looked sufficiently frazzled.

And be sure when you disassemble the the CV you mark the outer facing side of both parts. The have an orientation for assembly. You will know if you get it wrong the joint will be very hard to move.
