I just finished installing my 2056 and tested everything on jack stands. I was able to get all five gears and reverse, no problem.

When I lowered the car on the ground and backed out of my garage I was not able to get first gear.

I did notice that the shift lever hits the base limiting how far back it will go.

I have read most of the forums referring to adjusting the shifter and it seems that if I shift into 2nd gear, loosen the bolt, move the lever further forward that will give me more travel shifting back into 3rd and 1st gears. I did this and got 1st gear but it still has a tendency to pop out of gear. I am going to try to adjust it that way a little further. Am I on the right track?

One additional point, based on recent experience adjusting the shifter on a side-shifter transmission. And also, since you're putting this back on the road after having it on stands (transmission removed and reinstalled).

Sure, go ahead and replace all the shift bushings. But, DO NOT reuse the conical set screws (or at least use lock tight). Had one that didn't stay tightened and the one shift rod rotated inside the other one. You can't see the screw without pulling back the rubber boot. This makes it very hard to diagnose why things won't work.

You can adjust the shift rod at the shifter all you want, but you'll never be able to shift into all the gears if the conical screw doesn't stay tight. Best wishes for getting it fixed.
