My co-worker has a 2004 350 and he always turns his nose up at my car. The other day he snickered at my idea of putting some wider tires on my car. Basically he said "Why would you do that?...your car doesn't have enough power to turn em!!". Is there a configuration that could blow away a 350Z at least in the straight away? Is this even comprehendible with a 4 banger?

Z specifications:
287 horsepower. 274 lb-ft of torque.
curb weight 3,400

I'd say you'd be set with about 180hp, a v8 would do it, but whats the point. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/rolleyes.gif)

i have a form of the 350 engine in my infiniti sedan, and it's a hell of alot faster than the 500 mile rebuilt engine on my 914.

I have one of each in my driveway. The 350Z is stock and the 914 has a 3 liter /6. The Z is quicker in a straight line. How much money do you plan to spend on your 4? You are going to need a lot if you want to beat your buddy. A better plan is to get him to come out to an autocross.

You don't need speed, you need acceleration.

That would require a 6 or 8 with moderate torque... 300ft/lbs of torque. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/smile.gif)

I'm actually saving up for a Raby engine and I haven't completely decided how much to spend. How much more money would it take?

in theory, you'd only need 170hp to be equal to him based on your car weighing 2000 pounds....

of course gearing (transmission and tires) make a big difference as well as other factors

my 2.1 /4 should have close to that amount of HP...not too cheap, I have about $3K into the motor and it's not finished yet or close to it (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/headbang.gif)

Why don't you just build the motor for you and your car. Stop worrying about some assjack at your work. Ask him how many 350z's he sees a day. I have 4 in my works parking lot alone. I don't think we have 4 of any other car in the lot. Then ask him if he is a sheep or a shepherd?

In theory yes.

I do not have any hard numbers to back up the following - just seat of the pants observations. My 3.0 teener should be 180+ HP. It is no doubt fast and fun. However, the 350Z is faster. The Z is a great car. It also has AC, heat, stereo, etc. etc. The 914 corners better and I think it is more 'fun' to drive.

The 350 and the 914 are both sports cars, but they are very different in many ways. They both do what they were designed for very well. There are many cars that are faster than the 350. 287 is not really a ton of HP. It is the above average 274 lb-ft of torque that make it fun.

So are you saying I need 262 hp with a 2892lb car. That's undoable.

There are so many fast impressive cars these days. The WRX, the EVO, the Z, the Vette, not to mention other really high end cars. Even 4 door M5's and AMG Mercs. I can't see trying to make 30 year old 914 in the same class as those cars. It just doesn't appeal to me.

Yeah!

And THEN tell him what happens to sheep around here.

And THEN take him for a ride on a twisty road.

I have been on the track with those nasy azz 350z's a few times. No comparison, they are faster, and can even keep up with most of the azz draggers. That being said, the 914 is the one that i would pick any day.

Or blow his doors off by installing a healthy SBC V8 350cid.

2400lbs / 325HP = 7.38lbs per HP.
compared to his 11lbs per HP.

You'd blow him away.

Yep. There's been big advances in performance in just the last few years. My '97 M3 sedan was the "Worlds fastest production sedan" the year it rolled off the line. Today it's somewhere on page 2. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/dry.gif)
