Last weekend I broke my year old throttle cable (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/mad.gif) I decided to order a Terry Cable (best out there?) from PParts.

The cable came in on Thursday (very good shipping time from CA to VA). I installed the cable today..too longer then I thought it would. It was a pain to remove the A/C console, pedal board, and snake the cable in while the car wa on all 4's. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/dry.gif)

After adusting the cable so I had full open and the pedal stop so I would stretch the cable. I figured I was done. As I was depressing the pedal by hand SNAP (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/dry.gif) (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/ohmy.gif)

WTF

After getting back in there I discovered the cable pulled out of the threaded piece that connects to the pedal linkage. WTF (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/ohmy.gif)

So I have contacted PParts to see what they will do?? (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/mad.gif)

I thought the $40 cable would hold up better then this..

That sucks.

I'm sure that after a phone call you'll have a new one on the way. I used a Terry cable on my IV and it was fine. I was told that Gemo makes decent cables as well.

The Terry cable was thicker then the original one. Not by much.... but stll thicker.

I wonder if my pedal movment is not correct and causing this? The last 25% is tough but doesn't seem too bad.

The way I installed it was to open the carbs 100% and set the pedal to = this when fully depressed. I used the pedal board stop to keep from depressing too far. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/wink.gif)

I remember a tread that the OEM cable was stronger than the terry, and that the terry was stronger than the OEM replacements..

something to that effect...

I've had mine in my v8.. (clutch is 3 times stiffer than a stock 914, throttle cable is taking 2 90 deg creases) for almost 2 years.

that said, I have replacements in the car...

I am rethinking my bellcrank linkage. Not sure if it is adding to the stress/tension required to go to 100% open.

I think "z" / "*" made a -4 style linkage piece on his six???

I might do some mods to the one I have?? It does make a hard bend around the CV.. Wonder if it could be pulled from below the CV and not above it. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/dry.gif)

If it got twisted around the clutch cable that could add to the problems.

Wasn't there a thread with someone cutting the center tunnel open?

I just feed the cable in and over the clutch cable connection to the pedal

I just went through this on our 1974 and had several OEM cables come apart at the swaged ends, two even before we got them fully installed. We finally used the Weltmeister (sp?) one and had no further trouble. The resistance should be the same through out the full motion of the pedal and if not something is wrong. I'd say check the carb linkage w/o a cable, the pedal feel w/o the cable and finally the cable itsself befor eit is hooked up (this takes two people to pull it back and forth).

(IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/screwy.gif) Well (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/huh.gif) the new cable is on the way. I talked to PParts and they are sending the new cable out. The crappy thing is I had to pay for another cable before they would send the new one out.

The only way they would send the new cable, without charging me is to have me return the defective cable first.

I am a little pissed that they enforce this policy across the board.

Seems like they should look at my history with them, ship the cable out (2-3 days), and send a return shipping label (if they want the broken cable back).

Now I am out another $40 and will need to pay to have the old cable shipped back to them (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/headbang.gif) I am sure once I bitch two or three times to them, they will refund me the $$$.. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/headbang.gif)

I guess I expected more from PPARTS (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/dry.gif) then a guy reading from a policy handbook word for word.

Lets hope this cable is made better then the last.

I would have called Terrycable direct. They have made custom cables for my shiftercart's race team and with the exception of one cable, they have been flawless. The one cable that was deficient was replaced no questions asked and they let me keep the old cable. They will build you a cable specifically for your needs.

Here is why the original one broke (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/ohmy.gif)

Not sure why this happened? I thought I routed things like the factory..

The one that lasted about a year (on the left) was a OEM or GEMO? type cable. I guess I routed the cable wrong under the engine. It broke at this bend

The one on the right is a Terry Cable and broke in 3 hrs.. Still trying to get my money back.. Working on my second week with PParts on this. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/mad.gif)

I broke my First Terry fairly soon after my SIX conversion in the same place.

The tube that comes out of the firewall for the throttle cable is aimed so the stock FOUR cable can go up and into the engine bay.
I bent the tube so it is aimed back toward the trans and bell crank. This stops the cable from sawwing through the sheathing and fraying 'til snapping.

Thanks Trekkor, (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/cool.gif)

I will mod the exit tube before I put on my new cable. Should have it Today or tomorrow.

The Terry Cable broke at the Pedal and not at the bend shown above. The Terry cable pulled out of the threaded end piece (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/headbang.gif) ..
