In putting together my list for going to Deals Gap this weekend with the SouthEast collection of 914's, I thought I would share my list and see if others have some suggestions...


Radar Detector
CB Radio or Motorolla Talkabout radio (+ more for others)
Binoculars
Camera
Haul-Ass Driving Music on CDs or IPOD (or 8-track)
Extra pair of sun glasses
Sun Block
Cig lighter cell phone charger
Maps in case of separation from the group
Camping first aid kit
Insurance card
Attorney's phone number

Food
Power Bars
Water
Money

Screwdriver(s)
A few basic wrenches (10mm, 13mm, etc)
Fan belt
Extra fuses
Tire pressure gage
Quart o'oil
Shop rag
Flash light


Any recommendations on some good Late Brak'n Haul-Ass Driving Music for canyon carving?

What I have so far is:

How about Van Halen's "I can't drive 65".

Better bring cab fair and a AAA card. Just incase you total your car and have to walk home. Better bring some leather work gloves and a long toe strap just incase you have to pull your car off the side of a mountain.

Enough bad thoughts. You will enjoy the road. Just don't overdrive the conditions.

Caveat: All items you bring should NOT take your eyes from your driving... (duh).

An old blanket. If you've got to crawl under the car and conditions are poor, you will appreciate a blanket sheilding you from bad elements (cactus, critters, sharp stones, oil puddles, etc...).

Cell phones don't always work in all areas - but you've got the CB... Might want a few quarters for a pay phone ?

I doubt you will get separated from the group - and I'm sure the group motto is "never leave a man behind" (pictures of Raising Arizona here).

I'd add a Trevac suit....the disposable kind....light weight takes up no room

a lenght of wire....at least 8' coil it up inside your spare

Small pair of vise grips

Roll of duck tape....colour or camo pattern your choice

Might want to bring some "big brass balls" to drive the gap
also I have heard a Pocket full of patience is sometimes required if you get behind a truck.

The mountain drive from Jake Raby's place to Deal's Gap (Tail of the Dragon) was fantastic. The weather couldnt have been better for keeping the targa top in the trunk. I put 338 miles on my car and very little of that was on straight roads.

I love the idea about having a Trevac suit in the car!! It is lightweight and could serve all sorts of purposes. The tow strap is a great idea as well. Also not too heavy, but getting a tow from a local "Apalacian American" with his Ford F150 could be handy for getting the car to the next gas station where they have a lift. (or just getting the car out of the ditch).

The length of wire is also a great idea. Maybe with some aligator clips.

I havent thought about TRAIN TRAIN from Blackfoot in a while. Good suggestion.

For some reason, I read Radar Dectector as radiator dectector. Then I re-read it, and saw it the same way. "What the hell is radiator detector and why does he need one for a 914?"

It took the 4th read over to get it right. *sigh* my eyes are playing tricks on me.

Where were you this weekend? We just did Deal's Gap and had a bunch of cars and people on the trip. We drove over 400 miles total (some WAY more).

The only thing I can tell you, from personal experience, is make sure you have two extra motormounts. I'm talking about the ones that attach between your engine and the engine bar.

Also, don't think you can drive 70 through the curves, I almost went over the side this weekend. make sure you have good tires and yur suspension is adjusted up.

Other than that, take the smae things you would keep i the car for any drive an hour or more away from home.

Well as ironic is it is, I was the one driving the red 911 with the cameraman poking out the sunroof. It was a fantastic drive!! I really appreciate everyone's time in getting it together. I now have three 914's but none of them are Dragon ready quite yet. The one that is closest is a V8 conversion that I cant seem to find time/focus to finish. The drive gave me some great inspiration to get that car finished so that I will have a midengined car running again.

In my mind, all the best Porsche's are mid engined and air cooled:

I want a T-shirt that has this theme....

Along with the disposable Trevac suit, I would suggest an extra driver's side seat cover in case you do a 360 down the mountain. On second thought, you may also stick an extra pair of clean boxers in your tool kit.

Jason,

I really despise those later model motor mounts. I always convert my cars to the ealier style mount by making hard steel spacers for the part between the cast iron bar and the engine block, and then cutting the tips of the cast iron engine mount bar so it is at the right level to fit the rubber mounts at the body interface. This has worked great for me! I think this is the way that the V8 conversions work as well.

I need to post my pictures of the Honda 600cc F4i throttle boddies mounted on a type IV engine. It looks great and is all finished except for a few details.
