The driver's side, right below the pushrod tubes and underneath the engine tin says:
S12
004.101.102A
VW 4

The passenger's side says:
S12
004.101.101A VW 7

What do I have here. I've been told its a bus engine. Are both halves original to each other?

Many Thanks,
Konrad 72/4 (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

if you want to know what engine it is, look at the engine serial number. EA is 1.7, EC is 1.8, GA and GC are 2.0, CV is a vanagon engine. there are others.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) engine number should be on top of the engine and related to those on the list below ...

those are the part #'s for the engine case halves
most VW & Porsche part #'s have a similar format
when the #'s are cast into the case in raised letters then they are not serial #'s
