Hello, I've caught the bug. I'm kickin tires on 914's in my area. Not sure if this is the right forum, wondering if someone can direct me where to find info on what to look for, watch out for etc. I'm in California so I'm looking for one I don't have to smog....pre 75. I've noticed some have FI removed and carb installed, any problems with that? Have a million more questions but I'll leave it at that. Thanks guys, I'm reading all I can on here...

We have the "how to buy a 914" but it is information overload. Basically rust free never been in an accident original fuel injection not ever color changed and all parts are on the car. We cannot be particular about year nor color these days, but a 73 2.0 is the one everyone wants, as it comes standard with all of the options. |

Carbs vs. FI is always a hot topic... but the consensus seems to be if the engine has an FI cam (i.e. original), don't pull the FI to install carbs. |

Found one online that looked nice but the pic of the engine looks like it has a single carb. That's a no no right? It will get you around but won't make you happy. I wouldn't say the car is a POS just because of the carb. Duals don't cost that much and are easy to install. You can also find all of the FI parts on this board. Worry more about rust than induction. Buy the most rust free car you can afford. engines and carbs are cheap compared to massive metal work.
Where are you in Cal? There are hundreds of us here and we can help you look at the car for red flags. |

#1) RUST. This is more important than any other feature of the car.
places to look: 1) under the rockers (around the jack posts) 2) under the battery against the firewall. Probe this area with a screw driver, if it is solid you won't hurt it. 3) front trunk, where the suspension bolts in - just behind the nose. when you have found one of sound body, then be concerned about engine, glass, wheels, etc etc. Zach |

Single carb right? Nope, that's FI. You can see the green injectors at the end of the intake runners. Your main focus should be on RUST. They all have RUST. If the owner is trying to tell you it's rust free he either hasn't found it yet or he's trying to hide it. Did i mention RUST? Thanks guys. I'm seeing a theme here. Look for rust then look for rust again. Then look for some rust.... Once you're done with that, you should probably look for rust. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/welcome.png) |

Then look at the paint...because rust likes to hide under that too:)

Check out CAMP 914. Craig usually has some really nice ones and he is a stand-up guy. ( camp914.com)
Also look at some of the threads on here where the guy is repairing rusty areas. It will give you a good idea where to look. Take your time and buy the most rust free one you can. Rust repairs can be daunting and costly. Read those repair threads and (IMG:style_emoticons/default/welcome.png) Good luck, Tom |

Welcome,
Before you buy a 914, ask a member here close to you to go with you to check it out. We all like to go and help people spend their money, or save them from buying a POS. Questions and answers are great but when you are looking at the car, you better know where to look and questions to ask. |
