I'm going to look at a guys speedster (kit car) today as he wants an engine. He has a 2.2 that he was going to install, but is scrapping that plan, as he can get me to build him a T1 and be driving it in about 4-6 weeks. (I quoted him the price on a T4 conversion but it's too much $ for him.)



I know nothing about it, I "think" it has webers. I know the hp ratings of the different 2.2's but how do I tell if it's a S, etc. It was out of a running 911.

What are these engines worth?
Would it be worth doing?
What questions about it should I ask? etc.

Get the engine #, it's by the oil sender it will read 901/XX, there was a thread on here a day or two ago that listed ALL the hp ratings.....

I just bought a complete 2.0 "S" with trans and carbs for 4k....I got a long block 2.2 for 2K.....

Conversion so far is running me another 2K.....

Depends on what it is and what condition it's in. A 2.2T engine that is worn could easily go lower that some of the parts on a 2.2S engine (cams/P&C)

If it's stock your HP is limited to the following:

T = 125hp type 911/07
E = 155hp type 911/01
S = 180hp type 911/02

You'll want to see an engine "type" number at the base of the fan support on the right hand side of the engine. It should be clearly stamped 911/07 or 02 etc.

Also... check out the serial number. E.G. 671xxxx would indicate this is a 6 = six cylinder, 7 = T motor, 1 = built in 1971 and the last 4 would be sequential build numbers.

With a T motor you would need S P&C and S-cams to make any serious HP. An E motor would be a nice fit but... both E and S motors of that vintage (2.2) would/should have MFI. MFI can be fit into a 914 but it's very tight from what I understand. The trunk divide leave little room if any for pump adjustment. I could be talking out my ass as I've never seen one, I've just heard about it. I did see a picture once so someone's done it. Carbs on either engine would probably be the best solution. MFI is expensive! (ask me how I know).

Hope that helps...

Oh... Price. Anywhere from $7-800 for a worn T motor to $5-6k for a fairly fresh S rebuild. Doesn't help much but, if you can narrow the type down and the condition I could offer more.

I purchased a complete 914-6 motor and trans, with excellent HEs and all of the sheet metal and acc linkage. Motor and trans had been rebuilt, less than 100 miles, purchased for $4000.

Pumped it up to a 2.5. Spoke to the engine builder at Rennsport, and he shared all of the receipts and other information.
It is still sitting on th efloor, waiting for the car to come back from the body shop. DICKS.

901/01 = a 1965 2.0 motor
901/02 = a 1967/68 2.0 S motor
901/07 = a 1967/68 sportomatic L motor

2.2 motors were 911/xx type numbers (the fist ones labeled as such)

A 3.0 just went for $5000 here. It hadn't run in about 5yrs but it had the top end done in the mid 90's and only had about 5k on that. The guy got it running for him and changed the /6 flywheel to a 911.
I wouldn't pay (trade) much more than $1500 for it.

I think I can get a deal on most of the conversion stuff, some I can make, rebuilding no problem (if needed) and the SDS efi would be nice in my bug with a turbo....Hmmmm

you pretty much MUST cut an access port in the firewall. you -might- be able to hit the 'part throttle' adjustment from inside the engine room. the idle adjustment is made with an 18" long very skinny socket inserted -through- the cooling fan.

Heh. Same issue. So you didn't consider the monovision idea? I love the fact that I can see better than I ever have, and losing the glasses was totally cool. But the age related crap (reading glasses) doesn't have a nice fix yet.

I've friends who have done the mono thing and it worked very well for them. It just seemed wierd to me and it took enough guts just to let them hack on my eyes! But now I'm wondering.....

I had Lasik done about 4 years ago. Love it. How often do I need to see a knats ass at less than 12" anyway?

If its a orignal 2.2T those " Webers" are probably Zenith carbs....not the most desireable carbs.......Parts are non existant except for gasket kits..

It could be 2.2S or E that has had the MFI removed and replaced with Webers

the Engine type #'s for a 2.2 are

911/03 stock T
911/06 Sporto version
911/07 US version
911/08 US version Sporto

911/01 stock E
911/04 E/sporto

911/02 stock S

Those numbers are good for the production run of the 2.2 engine late '69 to '71

the engine nmbers fro the 2.2's

run from 610-0001- through 631-0001-

Just got the oil tank installed.....waiting on the conversion fittings from Pegasus...Tuesday, then plumb it and wait on the oil console and filler from the "bong in the hat guy"....then the engine install.

Well I got it wrong...He was willing to make a trade on almost anything he had BUT the 2.2 S w/ MFI. Too bad it looked mint with a set of SSI exchangers that I could have sold.

He wants to keep the engine as it's the correct one for his 911. It has a 2.7 RSR in it right now.

On the upside it looks like I'm building a speedster for him. He wants it done in 6-8 weeks.

Got to crunch some numbers for Monday.

Looks like from this thread it's gonna be a waste of my time to insert a '68 2.0 "T" motor in mine. Guess I'll stick with the 4 banger.
