Exhaust recommendations for 914 - 2.0 Options

I'm considering replacing the Triad exhaust system which came with the car. What is considered the best all around system by most? My preference is a single tip product (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)

I'm getting a lot of popping on decel even after total carb rebuild, gasket replacements, etc. Could it be the Triad system and if so, is this to be expected with the Triad?

I like the simple look of the the Bursch system. On a scale of 1-10 with 1 being the original exhaust and 10 being the Triad where does the Bursch fall in terms of loudness/sound?

if the probelm occured after a gasket replacment and carb rebuiold that is were I'd first look. dont go replacing teh exhaust to fix a probelm that devloped after the carbs and gaskets were worked on. gerneral principle of automobiles is that a probelm that surfaces right after a repair is 99% blilely to be associated to that repair.


for quiet sound, the stock muffler is pretty good, the bursh is noiseier my friend has a bursch on his 914, it actually got quieter after he had it ceramic coated. still louder than my stock muffler

The probem was there before the carb work. MUCH less of an issue now but still pops reguarly on decel which drives me nuts. I was told the Triad could be the problem but it was from someone who is not a Triad fan so other opinions would be useful.

exhaust leaks can be a source of decel poping also. make sure that is checked out

Another vote for the Bursch exhaust. I've got one on my 2.0L. I personally think it sounds pretty good, not too loud, in fact a little quiet for my tastes, but I prefer loud exhausts. The "quality" of the sound to me is good with this exhaust. VW owners always crane their heads as they recognize that flat four sound.

I really don't think its the Triad exhaust, but maybe its leaks around the flanges to head. There are copper gaskets that love to leak and cause poping on decel as air gets sucked in and causes the noise.
Check the carb too, sounds like a single carb? I have never been happy with one of those as the long steel runners cause all kinds of running/tuning problems.

Dual carbs and the copper gaskets replaced last week as well. The mechanic showed me the gasket under the left carb - it was deformed and streched out...no way it provided a seal. I was hoping that was the "only" problem but evidently not.

I've had a triad on for several years, never had any popping anytime. I really don't think the type of muffler causes this as much as the condition of the muffler/exhaust system.

I haven't had issue with my triad...when my car was tuned up and running it.
However, if you want to switch, I still have my old Bursch that I'd sell you, since you're so close.

The Triad itself isn't the cause of your popping. And to answer your question, the Triad is the best muffler IMHO for the 2.0/4. The Bursch gets raspy and nasty as it gets older. It's a popular choice because of it's price. But the Triad isn't much more.

Thanks all. I guess I need to further check for exhaust leak. Given I already changed the gaskets is there a way to check without simply replacing again - are there other potential leak sources?
