I will convert to a 911 steering column. I have parts for both (with the exception of an early horn contact), and am debating in my head of which one to use.

If I use the early parts, it would "look" more period correct, but the switches just aren't as nice and seem to be harder to come by. If I use the later model 911 parts, I can easily get replacements, but it just won't look the same.

I'm a little biased toward using the early parts, but I'm still "on the fence" when it comes to deciding.

Thanks for your input.

I used the early style from a '73 911. I'm happy with the result ... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Hmm.

10 to 1 so far. I didn't realize it would be so lopsided. Guess I should find an early MOMO adapter for my early column.

Anyone know how the lever handles come off the early switch arms?

I re-did the mount plate lowering it down a bit.

Dash mod....

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/thumb3d.gif)

I used the attachment piece from a 911 dash and left some metal around it to mate it to the 914 dash.
It's not a perfect fit as the angle is off just a bit compared to the 914 dash sub-frame.

Yours looks nicer ... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

I didn't have the 911 dash piece. I carefully determined the angle from the stock 914 steering column and the dash face and built the box for the key lock. I made a 1:1 drawing, cut it out, verified my dimensions and made one out of sheet metal.

I'll pop rivet it into the dash when I get to that point.

I turned down a 911 rose because in true CSOB fashion, I didn't want to buy one when I could use my lathe instead.

More pics as I progress.

Must be a few different versions of early switches. Mine are from a 71 and look much older than yours do SirAndy.

I also have to replace the rubber levers on mine. I have them ordered but haven't yet figured out how to remove the old ones.

'73. The best one i could find, and yes, the switches still look pretty good. But I do need new decals for the faceplate.

Btw. in my picture it looks like the dash plate for the lock is just hanging there with a large gap, but in fact the 911 sheetmetal i used forms a "cup" just like the one you made. It's not quite as ugly in real life as it looks in the pic. And yes, i did rivet that piece as well.

So Andy, since you have done this, I have a question that I have been debating with myself for a while.

Let me explain. The 4-cyl stalk had a momentary contact to "toggle" the dimmer relay to switch between high beams and low beams. The 911 stalk has both a momentary contact as well as a two position switch. As it is wired in a 911, the two positions are for high and low beams. The momentary contact allows the headlights to flash low beams. Since the 914 headlights are hidden, it makes no sense to be able to flash the low beams.

My question is: Did you eliminate the headlight dimmer relay and utilize the two position contact on the stalk or did you utilize the momentary contact and wire that to the headlight dimmer relay? I know yours was once a 4-cyl steering column before thieves tore it all up.

I'm strongly considering only using the momentary contact to drive the dimmer relay. I already have a fog light flash relay that will continue to operate if I do this. It may not work exactly like it should, but it would work.

I kept the relay and used the momentary contact to switch the relay, just like on the /4 column.

I didn't feel like redoing any of that circuit and was pleased to find the trigger option on the 911 column.

So I won't be alone. Got my new grips for my switches. The old ones were glued on.

Minor setback.

I made my bracket fit my 71 unit body, but this is going in my 74. Who knew the bolt patterns changed between years?

Gotta re-make my bracket.....

Yepp, early and late have different bolt patterns.

I found that out a few years back when i replaced the main wiring harness in my '70 with that from a '74 and i went to install the '74 steering column.
Ooops ...

Setbacks.

Oh well, it's just cutting welding and grinding....

It's amazing that the ignition switch almost lines up with the existing Emergency Flasher switch hole.

I'm moving the fog light switch to the other side (only 3 wires to extend).
