how fast can you safely spin a 901. Can it be run by a 240hp engine that has a redline of 9k? Will it explode? Does it need to be ballanced?

The race cars spin them to 8500RPM. Torque kills. RPM doesnt. Get a gear lube cooler setup.. it will last.

B how much would a decent tranny cooler run and is it worth it to put in a squirter on the dif. i know it is more like putting parts together but i mean the whole setup. i will doing 170 hp and about the same in torque, and i drive it hard, in the long run how much of a difference will make in tranny life. |

Yes. "Squirt" the diff. The biggest issue we have is R+P failure. 90% of the failures are do to worn out cases not allowing the pinion bearing to stay in the case. This lets the pinion gear "walk" on the ring gear.
Honestly.. you'll be fine without a cooler. We run 20min. races 8-10 times a year with 245hp 3.0's and 3.2 in front of 901's without a gear lube cooler. B |

my unc runs hot rod s2000 (300 hp crank fire etc) motors in his landspeed roadster (>1000lb car). set records in their class all the time... havent even touched the potential of the motor. running them in 5th at 9000rpm.....
i have no idea what the trans can do.... just the engines (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) |

QUOTE(smrz914 @ Dec 1 2004, 11:07 PM) Thanks guys. I like where this thread is going. So what does this cooler install entail? basicly you remove the drain plug and install a fitting that goes through a filter to a pump to a oil cooler radator back to the trans. now the extras include a thermo switch to turn on the pump and a fan on the cooler. now you have several ways of getting it back to the trans, one in through the fill plug. or better you drill and tap the case in several places like over the gear stack and the diff, then install oil squirters to spray oil on the ring and pinion and the gear stack. what this does is it makes sure the oil gets to the high wear points, instead of relying on spash lubing. as well as this keeps the heat out of the trans which can cause several thing to happen: like oil breakdown, oil loss of viscosity and the worst is the intermedate plate expanding and the bearing races moving out of the plate ( rare but very bad ) |

And it's safe to just drill and tap into the casing? Think that's safe with that much power?
