Welding Aluminum is not easy. I have seen pros screw it up. Maybe someone else will have better info but you may need to take it to a pro if you have never welded AL before.

Isn't the transmission case a magnesium-aluminum alloy? If so, it's even harder to weld.

Mag is hard to weld and it warps, you can do it with just gas welding, but you need the correct welding rod. Stuff has to be super clean.
You can only weld about a 1/4" at a time in a couple different places on the case, let it fully cool, repeat, until you're done. Bug drag guys often weld bars (gussets) to the bottom of the case, to keep them from breaking, it can take a couple of weeks to weld them in fully. |

What would it cost you to replace the entire tranny vs welding?

They are magnesium. I weld 911 fans and housings weekly for customer's. I have very expensive mag rod $900 for 4 lbs.. Oxy is a new one to me as mag is flamable. TIG uses inert gas so it can't start on fire with oxygen.

What would it cost you to replace the entire tranny vs welding? Here in Finland a lot, you probably have to ship it somewhere else (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) I have few connection's to schools where they teach welding.. I,m counting on these friends (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |

I also have a case you can have. Shipping from Germany to Finnland would cost about Euro 30. If you are interested, I will send pictures.
Keep in mind you will need to readjust the R&P if you change the case. Need to set pinion depth, differential bearing preload and backlash. |
