certainly a bit rough for only 27 thousand miles, but one can see by looking at the car that the miles are certainly believable. We have the exact same car in our display area with only ten thousand miles on it but light ivory. The color is what will sell this BAT car. And removal of the orange stripes the first thing that should be done (after adjusting the clutch) Surprising that the complete exhaust system had to be changed with such low miles

I agree with the Doc on this one. I expected it to be a lot cleaner underneath for such low miles. Still a very nice car. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

thanks for the tip @Big Len i checked that one out, wealth of info for our 1.8 L Jet history research. can't agree with comments on BAT site saying orange side stripes have to go. the original owner ordered that car as a GULF 917 homage? brilliant. don't know if its really a 28,000 miler, but its a low mileage very original very honest car that has had to have all the usual things sorted after a long time in storage. if it really did go into storage in 85 it stacks up. thats exactly what mine was like when i bought it off the original owner in 89. though there is an oil change service sticker dated 99? and 20,000 miles. unless its actually 79 on the sticker badly written. there has been a bit of work done around the new fuel tank. look closely you can see the two small bolts that hold the front trunk hood release handle up under the cowl have been painted over. some paint has been shot around in that area. all the engine hoses are original. still got the reddish hose from the decel valve. very obvious battery tray repair and renew. but so long as its been done properly and the rust has gone no further. looks like the rear trunk is up on one side. its not a broken roller. the hinge plate must have let go? hopefully not a sign of some extensive battery acid spray damage? be watching this one. ----- what is it with these very original unrestored unmolested 74 and 75 1.8s that keep popping up every couple of months? who would have thought 30 years ago that they would have been so cherished and left alone. |

Photos of everything but the EC-A or B confirmation. yes i was looking for that emission sticker. i bet @JeffBowlsby is too. i've got a theory that somewhere late in the run his mysterious USEPA only pops up. this is the kind of car it would have been on. a late EC-B. interesting that it is speced up exactly as mine was from the dealer with the sway bars. |

Love the color, but there are areas that look great and others that look like 125K miles. We have a 2001 996TT in perfect condition cosmetically, but has 126K miles… folks are always surprised.

Very nice car that anyone could be proud to own. However, I'm not buying that it's only 27K miles. Seems to me that folks are taking advantage of the 5 digit ODO way too often. Pedal pads seem to have some significant wear on them for 27K. I think there is too much rust and road debris abrasion on the bottom side to be 27K. I bought my Miata used with 30K+ miles on it and it had far less road blast / abrasion on bottom side than this car has. I could be wrong but I'm a doubting Thomas by nature. |

I bought my Miata used with 30K+ miles on it and it had far less road blast / abrasion on bottom side than this car has. I could be wrong but I'm a doubting Thomas by nature. its a strange one. had a good look at photos while i was adding data to L Jet research we have been doing. more careful look at the oil change sticker on the door reveal. 8/77 - 20,010m. the car was sold new 9/74. original owner was doing 7,000m a year at that point. if that mileage kept up until 1985 the car would be approx a 70-75.000 m car. to be a 29 K m car the driving pattern by the owner must have changed drastically before it was stored away in 85. that is possible. or it could be a broken odo car. (but still sub 100K miles). wherever it has sat stored has been very humid. the surface corrosion on all the plated engine parts/bolts is not something i would expect on a dry stored car. (see the AFM to aircleaner bolts and other engine fittings). mine is not corroded like that and neither are several members cars here that have been well looked after. all those bolts plates etc in and on engines look better than that. the condition of the tool kit is surprising. lots of surface rust on jack. (missing plastic bag). original may have been lost and its a replacement? other strange things are drive shafts still have white painted stamped numbers on them. (i didn't know about those numbers on driveshafts until i saw these photos, long gone on mine). those driveshafts have not seen over 100K miles. much less. it could be a very good car but one i would want to take a close look at in person given the battery tray work and some other clues. i can remember looking at cars in 89 that had shot hell holes even then, but cosmetically were still very good otherwise. i'd like to know more about the engine and just how it was stored. and recommissioned. 30+ years is a long time to be doing the woody allen trick with the VW in a cave. but it can be done. if the engine was stored right. topped right up with fresh oil before storage. i did it, but only for 16 years. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) EDIT its also got a strange engine bay back pad. they should be grey if stock and unmeddled with. that one looks like its been pulled out and shot with some kind of black ripple finish paint. someone's been in that engine bay and done a big clean up/dress up. dunno why you would change the back pad on a 29K mile car? |

@Big Len
i'm putting my bet in at $50K max. its not in the league of that blue 73 from a year or so back that belonged to the old lady in florida. (holy cow was that a car). or that 75 yellow one from a few years back at sotherbys. they were the real deal. this one could be good but its got lots of ????? for a serious collector to be buying over photos. only a collector would bother laying down stoopid money. the bloke who is selling will be making himself a handsome profit. i bet he picked it up for a modest sum at the estate auction in 18? |

@Superhawk996 and I are of the same mind on this thing. For me, the hoses are way to heat cycled to be only 27k.

@Superhawk996 and I are of the same mind on this thing. For me, the hoses are way to heat cycled to be only 27k. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) (you would know all about that given your torments). one good way to know. drop the trans and look at the clutch. 29,000 mile car put into storage in 85 is 90% to still have an original rubber core clutch in it. if it was driven by anyone who drove properly. driving it again it after 30+ years in storage it drops its perished rubber guts and starts slipping. (16 years will do it). the plate hits the fly wheel bolts. within hours, not even days. ask an idiot who should have pulled the trans while he had the car on jackstands doing the suspension bushings and shocks. clutches went out of use sometime in mid 80s. fitted to all 914s originally. same style clutch went in 930 turbos. back then. don't see a new clutch in receipts? has definitely had the engine down in this car. refinished engine mount bar in paint by looks of it. ![]() |

Yeah I am intrigued with this one also. I was the one questioning the battery tray so much. Either the owner is relatively ignorant on his car or he is not being fully upfront on that battery tray. If the latter, it brings into question other parts of the car and it’s history also.
Paint reading on the trunk is 38??? This car has so many contradictory points related to its 27k original mile status. Clearly a decent car but unless I laid eyes on it, I would be no higher than a mid $30’s buyer. It will likely bring high 50’s. I hope for the buyer’s sake it doesn’t go above that. |

@wonkipop Yes, I saw the engine bar painted black instead of silver.
Yet there's a passenger side air hose stretching to the fan on the driver's side. I've never seen that before on any 1.8. That seems to be a clue that it is original. |

The pic 66 shows that this car has some rust trying to get out. This pic and several others make me question the integrity of the information provided. Battery tray discussion is a comedy, and as others denoted the engine, suspension, and undercarriage are not from a 27k mile car.

That seems to be a clue that it is original. its in his receipts for parts post 2018 @Big Len . he bought the splitter you fit to the fan a couple of years back. not orig on a 74. 74 1.8s only had the driver side hose. the splitter and 2 hoses was either an option in 75 or was standard. not sure. but it happened in 75. also the hoses are not original. they ought to be if its a 27 K m car that was in storage for 30 years. i've still got the original on mine and its same age and more miles. trouble is i started looking closer at the photos,....and i shouldn't have. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) there is little stuff everywhere you look. check roof clips in rear trunk (engine bay end). one clip has original bolts. the other one is fastened with some other kind of bolts. i dunno. its a good car in a lot of respects, but it ain't no 27k miler. brand new horns fitted. look in behind the front grilles. i think it was a bit less tidy in 2018 that it is now. as noted by @914next - that paint is laid on with a trowel on rear trunk lid. either that or his digi dial had a short circuit. or bog? |

other strange things are drive shafts still have white painted stamped numbers on them. (i didn't know about those numbers on driveshafts until i saw these photos, long gone on mine). those driveshafts have not seen over 100K miles. much less. I'd disagree on the 1/2 shafts. Those shafts have some serious mileage on them given the amount of build up on oil dust build up on the boots, oil leakage around the trans, etc. Looks to me like the driver side shaft was disconnected at the trans and then vehicle rolled around tearing up the the paint on the shaft as the CV shaft hit the trailing arm. A nick in the paint from road debris or paint flaw doesn't lead to a rust ring like that. This sort of stuff just isn't consistent with 28K original miles or even having sat for 30 years. I bought a set of used 914/6 shafts and CV's not long ago, they weren't advertised as sub 27K miles and they were in far better shape than these are. Hopefully someone buys at the right price and doesn't buy into the 28K mile hype which for me, means I can't trust anything the seller has to say. This whole BAT "shows 28k miles" stuff is (IMG:style_emoticons/default/stromberg.gif) knowing full well that they haven't lied to a degree that can be contested in a court of law but knowing full well that the car really isn't a 28K original miles but is really 128K. The rest of the car speaks for itself and anyone should be proud of a car like that even if it has 128K miles. But lets stop the nonsense of pretending that cars like these are low mileage. If the mileage was documented from day one and consistent to 2022, that would be one thing. That is not what is being offered here. ![]() |
