No way I was ever going to spring for a 5k plus professional paint job and with the vintage grand prix coming up, thought it was time to do a little/lot of body work and refresh the paint. Didn't turn out too bad. Lots of elbow grease though. It was hot in the old driveway too.

What actual paint product did you use for the silver metallic?

I'd gladly pay 5k for a professional paint job but those days are long gone. As @mepstein said, 20k is the new 5k.

Your car looks sharp, good job. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

I can't imagine having a car so valuable I would put 20k into the paint. I could put a 6 in it and deal with the fade.

Very nice.

How many cans did you use?

I've been rattle canning different little body repairs on my 914. I already have one non-functional Porsche; don't need 2 no-ops Porsches.

Yeah, if it were merely 5k, I would have done things veeeery differently on mine.

o.p. nice work, can't really tell in the pics but did you get any tiger striping? I feel like that's one of the biggest issues with rattle can jobs.

A gallon of PPG paint plus clear coat, plus thinners and hardners and primer will run close to $2000. Now add in sand paper, primer and filler. A 5k paint job is a steal.

It took 6 cans of grey and two cans of blue. 340 dollars for that. The rest went into tape, sand paper, buffing and polishing compound, and clear coat.

I was very careful about getting good overlap so no tiger stripes. I think the modern spray pattern on these cans helps with that. There are a couple spots where it isn't perfect but nothing really noticeable.

And the front looks great, nice repair. Just fyi, places like maaco paint can be a good deal if you do the work and supply the paint. They shoot it. It was a way back in the day. I'm sure the right coast has a version of maaco or earl schieb.

Sadly the seams where the fiber was bonded to the metal are pulling in a couple spots nothing I can really do about it. Holding up pretty good for a mod done more than 40 years ago.

All of my underside panels: fender wells, firewall, floors, front & rear trunk, engine tins, underside are rattle can. Although went with pro for body, it was when it was a 5k job.

From the pictures, that looks like a really presentable job, well done that man.

As someone else has said, a $5000 job is now a $20,000 job. For $500 you should be really pleased with that!
