Decided to take a break from rust repair and do something more fun. Decided to take care of the engine mount for the 3.6. (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/html/emoticons/welder.gif) It's the firewall mount from Patrick Motor Sports.

Also took care of the shift bushing area. I had to grind away the factory cupped area for the stock bushing and boot and enlarge the hole for the PMS spherical bearing. I ground away the cup and used a green-lee cutter to enlarge the hole. Then drilled and tapped the three mounting holes.......and viola!

And just for shits and giggles, I welded up the coil mount on the firewall. I didn't want to just drill holes and nut and bolt it in, so I welded threaded standoffs to the firewall. Still need to figure out oil line routing and DME harness routing and then I think the firewall should be done.

Oh yeah, I removed the stock four cylinder engine mount supports. Lots of fun spot weld drilling. I can see the ebay add now:

I purchased a couple of spherical bearings and some percision shaft stock. I was planning on doing that same thing. Nice to see a part is available. How are you planning on keeping grit out of the bearing?

An item you may find usefull. The slang name for these abrasive discs is "rice cakes". They are available at you local machine tools store. For removing thinner coats of paint & rust, they are killer.

Actually their called linear bearings. They allow the shaft to move in and out, and rotate at the same time. They are really smooth in motion, but very vunerable to grit. I didn't have time to try to use the ones I purchased from the bearing store during my build. But now that I have my motor out again, I may check into this again. It's going to require a boot or cover of some sort though. |

Very similar to scotchbrite but stiffer. You can spin em' up to 15-20 K rpms. They come in various grades of abrasion....also different sizes. The one in the pic is heavy duty & 3.5 inch dia, but go down to .75 dia....IIRC |

I recently purchased the same item. What a stout piece and great price too. Please let me know the outcome regarding the boot. I have been looking for some type of protection for the bearing as well for some time now. All to no avail.

Thanks, I'll definitely look into this for my project. Seems to me that a lot of "flop" gets introduced in the shfting at that very point.

Lou, Sorry I didn't take any pics during the removal of the stock engine mount supports. It's a PIA job, but it does look a lot cleaner without them. I couldn't see going this far with my 6 project and leaving them in. Although, they would make a great place to jack up the car. I saw where someone made an aluminum puck that bolted into the mount just for that purpose.
