Quick question - Are the stub axles from an early 911/912 and those from a 914-6 the same?

NO!

The CV Joints were different, so the flanges are different (splines are the same).

Depends on your definition of "early". True "early" 900 series cars, 1964-1968, are REALLY different, and use 2 bearings. Later ones differ in CV diameter and configuration, but may fit the splines.

Cap'n is correct as usual. The "early" lobro halfshafts had two universal joints per side. CV joints replaced them in 69 I think.

Actually, CV jopints appeared in 67, IIRC. Retrofit kits with inner and outer stub axles and a CV joint halfshaft were in the kit. Many cars had them installed one side at a time, so you would see them in the shop with one of each. The pre 1969 outer shafts were about 10" long and had a small number od large ssquare cut splines, much like a VW bug or bus. The Cap'n
