I know a little about the 914/6 VIN's since I have been researching them. That is a pretty early 914/6, certainly one of the earliest to come to the US. It cannot be a 916, it is the wrong serial # for one. What does it look like? A picture would really help here. The 916 had a welded steel roof such as a 911 coupe, and was not a Targa like a 914. Either a 914/6 GT or a 916 would have welded steel fender flairs. But a GT, technically, would have other modifications. The car could be a 916 or GT "look" if it had flairs and 916 style bumpers. But looks do not a car make. Do you have the original description? We can help if you think the car was misrepresented. Contact me with more details, and I'll do what I can.

I'm guessing though that your friend didn't pay 914-6 GT or M471 prices. Correct?

Thanks guys, Ill take some pics of the car this week.

The guy paid a bunch for the car at auction. If I remember correctly the car was labeled as 914-6 GT.

has steel flares, but glass hoods..its currently painted black, Im not sure the of displacement of the engine.

The buyer is a broker, sells high end cars, and uses my friends shop to service the cars..

Im new to 914 ownership myself so I really dont know the history of how many 914-6 GT's were made, or how many homologation cars were made..Just trying to help this guy out as we think he was ripped off. He knows less about the 914's than I or my friend do .

PS someone emailed me that this VIN May have been wrecked.. whatever this car is it cant be aligned. the tub is bent pretty good

The 914/6 GT was a strange beast. The factory converted a few cars as listed by Glenn Stazak. They did make 400 kits available for people to convert their own; this was a requirement for homologation. However, and this is the tricky part, the extent of the conversion was pretty optional. In almost all cases, the steel flairs were added. About the same for the fiberglass lids with the balsa reinforcements, the fiberglass bumpers and rocker panels. I'm sure most of the engines would have been uprated, but even the factory did different levels of tune depending on the event; rally engines were detuned for reliability. Check the brakes, on the front, converted aluminum S calipers were used, but should have the 49.5mm bores compared to the S with 48mm bores. They may also have fast remove type pins or other modifications. On the rear, the 914/6 calipers were spaced for vented rotors. The original GT rotors are unique to the car and do not require any spacers to center the rotor as would 911 rotor conversions. The car should also have a front mounted oil cooler with a steel cover/duct in the bottom of the trunk. The 100 liter fuel tank was rarely installed; it was used more on the long event cars. The original pieces are rare and very expensive. If the car has the correct parts, and not reproductions, then the price starts to be realistic. Many cars were written off, then reconstructed. This makes for tricky titles. However, I know of at least four cars with "twins" purporting to be the same car. One pair each have half of the original body. The other three were rebodied with new chassis, then the original chassis were reconstructed. A GT expert could check all this out. On the GT's Glenn would be one expert, and he would know who else could be more local to check it out.

It was I who emailed you, I have the history of nearly 900 914-6s, I run the 914-6 Registry with Larry Lee.

This is the exact text from the listed in 12/1991 Panorama

blt from a wrecked orig six (#9140430116) & solid four (#4702907919). Motor strong, structurally solid, runs & drives great, needs some work to be perfect, incl wrecked six chassis w/orig serial numbers & many extra parts price $7000.00

note: there is no mention of GT or even race car.

I bet it's the car in this thread.

http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?act...9749&hl=auction

It was picked apart pretty well in the replies as not being genuine.

Yes its the car in the other thread.... I dont own the car...It in my friends shop now for some TLC.

Are there other locations on the tub where the VIN is stamped?

I know on a 911 the VIN is located 3 places on the tub two of which are visible....

Bring on the bad news, if this is car has been re VINNED the seller is going to be in a world of shit..

The buyer has already started legal actions, if 4702907919 can be found on the tub where would it be? on the 911 you have to remove the center under dash piece and part of the VIN is stamped there... is the 914 similar?

I know the buyer was uninformed, but there is yet another scumbag seller out there that should be dealt with..

Only vins I know of are door frame, front passanger fender inside trunk, one in window, and the one by the passanger headlight inside, but I dont think that last one has the vin.

I think thats it..

Probably wrong.

There's a chassis number in the rear trunk of a six if I'm not mistaken. You should then be able to get a certificate of authenticity from Porsche North America (which would say if it was a GT) which lists the chassis number.
