Not a no-no. It is just very useful to get a few data points when looking at a car. Get the VIN and compare for all locations to be sure they all match ( windshield frame on North American market cars, right fender, Made In Germany tag on right headlight bucket or fuel tank wall on later cars, compliance decal on drivers door latch post, and on the ownership) Get the data from the Karmann badge on the drivers door hinge post; the paint code can tell a lot ( original color, custom color, /4 or /6 in some cases), and the body # ( not on the /6, but look in the front or rear trunk for the body # also, the /6 has a 13xxxx or 13xxxxx body # while the /4 has a xxx9xxx body #). So these three data points alone can reveal an awful lot about the car. The date code from the compliance decal (if present) is useful as are the engine and transmission #'s.
So if you are going to look at a 914 it is very useful to get as many of these data points as possible, and report them to someone such as myself for interpretation. The data goes into a database for comparison purposes, and the interpretation might help you get an unusual version or help you avoid a pieced together clunker. |
