Because there's no eye contact or voice intonation in e-mail, it's sometimes helpful to punctuate messages with textual emoticons known as "smileys." A smiley can clarify the writer's intention when it might otherwise be misinterpreted. The semicolon-hyphen-close parenthesis combination at the end of this paragraph is a wink. Tilt your head towards your left shoulder and you'll see a little "smiley face" with its right eye winking. I know it's a pain in the neck, but it's better than making enemies because someone took something you wrote *too* seriously. ;-) There are literally hundreds of smileys, but here's a short list of the most common ones. Some people use them more than others, but most people use them occasionally. :-) Smile ;-) Wink :-D Laughing, big smile :-( Frown :-\ Chagrin, puzzlement :-P Sticking out tongue :-* Kiss |
