So earlier today I informed my wife that I was sending my heads off to get them ported. Her response was "hmmmm, that car really seems like a money pit". What? Thats absurd!!!!
Working on my 914 keeps me sane. Its a hell of a lot cheaper than a psychiatrist. Some people just don't understand. I guess next time, I need to forget to tell her when I spend money on the car. |

My wife knows the sacrifices that I (we) both made for 17-18 years raising our three kids. I sold my 63 XKE Rdstr to buy a house and drove SUV's and a ford sedan to shuttle the kids. The kids didn't even know that I worked on cars other than oil changes, tires, and washes. Now they tell their Mom "We didn't know Dad could take apart and put cars back together" like I was some stranger....
Now my mid-life allows me to do what has been laying dormant for over a decade and a half. It does keep me from needing a psych but has caused my wife to want to see one. Raising three kids to adulthood I fiugure I'm down $750K or so. I've got a lot of making up to do. |

I involved my wife in the selection process for the car. She was the one that actually said JUST BUY IT when I was on the fence. Boy am I glad she said that! (Not sure she is when I spend a 10 hour day in the garage...)
She has some emotional ownership of the car too. Recently I had the chance to buy my dad's 2008 cayman S for wicked cheap, and brought up the possibility of selling the 914 to get the cayman. She got quite upset, since the 914 is "our car." (yes I know i should have bought the cayman and kept the 914 too). When she brings friends over, she always brings them into the garage to show the car off. Sometimes it's even resting on its own four tires when she does it! She knows I work hard and was happy to let me spend the money and time on something that I love. Plus, we can afford it with 2 good incomes and no kids (yet). I am working hard to get the car fully sorted before mini-mes arrive -- almost there!! |
