In the fan housing on a 914.....if the cooling flaps are in the dropped position, is cooling occurring or is it when the flaps are lifted?

They "fail" in the full cooling position. Meaning, if the thermostat is disconnected, the flaps will rest in the full cooling position.
For the passenger side, the flaps will be *down* and cover the oil-cooler which routs the max. amount of air to the oil-cooler. On the drivers side, the flaps will be about horizontal giving max. airflow to the cylinders. This arrangement is also the reason why cylinder 3 usually runs hotter than the others and the CHT is located on cylinder 3 for that same reason. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/popcorn[1].gif) |
