In the fan housing on a 914.....if the cooling flaps are in the dropped position, is cooling occurring or is it when the flaps are lifted?

'Lifted' is cooling mode .... sunglasses.gif ....... with the little linkage rod 'tab' pulled up and towards the front of the car.

They "fail" in the full cooling position. Meaning, if the thermostat is disconnected, the flaps will rest in the full cooling position.

For the passenger side, the flaps will be *down* and cover the oil-cooler which routs the max. amount of air to the oil-cooler.

On the drivers side, the flaps will be about horizontal giving max. airflow to the cylinders.

This arrangement is also the reason why cylinder 3 usually runs hotter than the others and the CHT is located on cylinder 3 for that same reason.

Which article sorry?

Scroll down a bit (perhaps midway and you'll see two sections, first says "Air-cooling flaps: Cold engine position (minimum airflow over oil cooler)", the other for "warm"

Good luck

Scroll halfway down the page, then scroll up a little bit. You'll see two pictures of an engine without the engine tin on it, showing the position of the flaps. One is in the "warmup" position, one is in the "it's already warm" position.

I'm no T4 expert, but isn't that head with the CHT boss on the wrong side of the motor?

Yea but if you make your own FI harness you can put the CHT on either side smile.gif

Could be that both heads have the boss.
