The LT1 is remarkably similar to a regular 350. It's just set up with a really nice combo, out of the box. It has reverse cooling, 10.5:1 compression, roller lifters, aluminum heads, and a really nice FI system on it. It has a nice broad torque range and gets good gas mileage. The reason it won't fit is the water pump, which I am relocating to the front trunk. With the water pump gone it's the same size as a regular 350, and it's no longer a big deal. I think most prople just shy away from it because it's possible to get the same performace from a regular SBC and then you can just use one of the prefabricated kits available. I chose it because I want the drivability of a modern FI and I could get the whole shebang for $1000. I'm fabricating most of my own conversion parts because I can, and it's cheaper that way, so I have no reason to not choose the LT1. Sorry to sound so preachy, but that's just a summary of my reasoning. It's quite possible I'll regret my decision sometime down the road, but I doubt it.
