Researching a FI system for a buddies late model 930, not much more than a low mile stock 3.4 engine with cams and a bit beefier snail.
I have another bud with a totally gonzo 930 with SDS, that car is a rocket (450+hp, extreme heads, paulter rods...etc.) and the SDS runs flawless on it, so SDS is in the running......But this guy has a clewette/electomotive crankfire (missing tooth) dual plug coilpack system already, so MS is a definite candidate as well. So what would be the best system that uses (ties into) the existing ignition? I can solder or would a finished system (like MS3 pro) be better? I know many of you have gone this route so I'm hoping to pick some brains. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |

Really? What an odd comment, Rob. Those coils have been around for decades and proven to be bulletproof, so what does it matter who makes them? But regardless, you're aware Ford doesn't make their own coils any more than Porsche makes theirs, right? And if you don't want to use parts that might be found on a Ford product there's a broader problem, since Bosch is one of Ford's (Motorcraft's) suppliers. Or maybe I misunderstood your point?
No matter. COP is excellent technology and more appropriate for a 930 project, it's just not that common in MS projects. My interest was piqued that it was "easier," since that's the reason most people choose the EDIS. Mark answered the question, he wants to stay German so hasn't looked at EDIS. Done. |

Really? The first time I saw an EDIS retrofit was on a friends 240Z. Brand new components driven by Megajolt. Cost him close to $1000. Failed. I towed him back to the Bay Area from Reno after an event here. Sadly, he had removed his distributor which he had left in, in case of failure. Turned out to be the EDIS unit. Give me Bosch over Ford stuff anytime... Mark will remember Leon. Came for the carb clinic... |

I towed him back to the Bay Area from Reno after an event here. Sadly, he had removed his distributor which he had left in, in case of failure. Turned out to be the EDIS unit. Give me Bosch over Ford stuff anytime... Parts fail all the time; people also pay too much for them...both Bosch and Ford parts have been moving cars for decades. I've never used EDIS parts, but have had two Bosch ignitors fail on me. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) One was my fault (excessive dwell, oops) and others just "gave up the ghost." That said, I totally agree with Mark on EDIS. I think the system is more difficult to configure since it requires maintaining the original crank trigger wheel setup, giving little flexibility to the end user. Since pretty much every aftermarket ECU sold in the last 10 years either has transistors suitable for directly driving coils, or logic drivers which can drive an ignitor or smart coil, while reading most any crank/cam trigger wheel geometry, there really is little reason to use the EDIS modules. Unrelated, but I personally like using either an ignitor or smart coil (built-in ignitor) even if the board supports dumb coils because it moves the high current drivers away from the main electronics. Bosch, Delphi, and others all make smart coils which can interface with MS directly. My new MS3-brained motor will be using smart Mercury Marine coils. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) |
