OK, I know its been discussed before.... so I'll ask again, for those of you who have done this....
What is the ideal engine for a /6 conversion? The ABM came with a 901.101.101. 7R From the Bruce Anderson book it would seem that normal engine HP for each possible engine is as follows: 2.4 w/ carbs - 130 ish 2.7 150 ish 3.0 170-180 ish 3.2 200 Before Andy jumps in, I don't want a 3.6 - too much power. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/lol-2.gif) What is the best driving /6 with ridiculous power? Is it worth it to build up the 2.4 to S spec? when you can get all the improvements of a 3.0? Thx |

Hey Rob for Conversions I love the suby motor's. For the price & driveability it is tough to beat. It can be done on the cheap too. I can get an SVX motor for $6-800 all day. If you get the adapter plate & keep your 901 that makes it pretty simple. If you go with a suby 4 it is pretty easy to upgrade to a wrx turbo setup. My NA dyno'd at 158 to the rear wheels. It pulls great & with the suby tranny shift like a new car too. I was going to do a suby six in my old v8 car. I have changed my mind to go with a wrx setup for my green car. Then move that drivetrain to my old v8 car. Then I'll be selling it & keeping the green car until I die (preferably not in my car (IMG:style_emoticons/default/evilgrin.gif) ). Which I'm doing because with the fire I had in the green car. I am ending up with an extra Stinger ECU that is perfect for the 4cylinder motor's. So only makes sense as that will save me a good $1200.
Having said all this I wouldn't do this in your beautiful 6 conversion. While I have no problem with conversions in general. I won't cutup a nice stock car. So what I have said above was really only there for the benefit of the overall discussion. Also I freely admit there is no beating the sound of a Porsche 6 with carbs. That rumble is absolute music to my ears. It's just damn spendy music (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) The suby setup is perfect for most cost wise 914 owners. Not only can you do it cheaper than a Porsche 6. It can be worked on by most shops, Easy to get parts, lot's of bolt on parts. Paired with a suby tranny it makes your car a new drivetrain that is so reliable & improve's it's driveability. All while getting you great MPG & a huge smile on your face. |
