914/6GT style door pulls, Anyone ever made their own? Options

I recovered my door panels today in red basketweave to match my recovered dash face. The old panels had the cut out for the door handle, but before I cut into my newly recovered ones I was wondering how easy it would to make my own leather door pulls, like these ones I saw on a set of panels off ebay:

Has anyone done this themselves or have any pictures of how the strap attachs to the door opening mechanism?

Possibly in the future. I've been working my way through the interior since I got the car 12 months ago. I got the new seats and had them reupholstered 6 months ago, before I decided to try the red out. It was kind of on my mind then, but I wasn't 100% sure and doing it seemed a bit of an expensive risk if it turned out I didn't like it.

I put the dash panels back on with ultra-thin velcro instead of the foam tape, that way I figured if I hated it it would be really easy to change it back. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
