Hi All,
Looks like I need to replace the CV's on my '74 2.0. I can slide both axles easily from side to side creating the banging noise I was trying to diagnose. I can get two new axle assemblies from Porsche for about $575 with shipping or I can get a set of these from Racer Chris for about $500 ... New Lobro German Type 1 CV Joints adapted for use in 914 rear axle assemblies. Are the Lebro's any better than the original CV joints? COst between the two is close enough that I will go with whatever is better. If the same, I will just get the new ones as there is less to take apart. Thx. Mike |

I'm in the same boat, and I'm really confused.
I've got a couple of split boots, so I figured I'd replace those and repack the existing CV joints. When I got them apart, though, I'm seeing wear on the surfaces I don't like. If I can feel the indentation with my finger, that's too much in my mind. When I look at replacement CV joints, though, it looks like some places want to sell me the bug joints, and some the 914-6 joints (like the link above from amphicar770). Would a 914-6 half shaft fit a -4 application? Is a lowly 1.7L really going to break a Type 1 CV? Gary |

Of course, then if you need to buy a new joint in the future, the Type 1 will not work with your 'new' setup. You would need to get your old axle back. |
