Hi All,
Looks like I need to replace the CV's on my '74 2.0. I can slide both axles easily from side to side creating the banging noise I was trying to diagnose. I can get two new axle assemblies from Porsche for about $575 with shipping or I can get a set of these from Racer Chris for about $500 ... New Lobro German Type 1 CV Joints adapted for use in 914 rear axle assemblies. Are the Lebro's any better than the original CV joints? COst between the two is close enough that I will go with whatever is better. If the same, I will just get the new ones as there is less to take apart. Thx. Mike |

If it were me, I'd pop for the extra $75 each for the full assembly all new, but save your old ones for parts in the future.
The original Porsche Type IV's CVs on the 914 were much stronger then the T-1 CVs, which is why Chris is modifying them, but I thought the "real" 914 CVs were NLA, but if the Porsche ones from the dealer are original Porsche parts or the substituted ones, then they'll be the stronger ones & IIRC they are also used on that period 911/912 too. Verify that they are selling you the genuine Porsche parts (axle+CVs). Rich Bontempi has the Porsche replacement part # 914 CV/axle assemblies, which he said had different splines than the originals, so you can't mix & match old with new. My mechanic of 40+ years now, who was a Porsche dealer 914 Tech (one of the first) always recco's the Porsche CVs over the Bug Type I CVs cuz they blow out with the greater TQ of the 914 motors, therefore Chris' upgrade/reinforcement. I can't speak for Chris's mods, but you'd still be mixing in new with 40+/- year old & stressed/aged parts if you go for the $500 CV only route. That's my 2 cents. Good Luck! And the gasket groove is machined. |
