My 1974 914 came with a 5 gauge instrument dash from a mid-70's 911. The wiring wasn't perfect by all means, but all gauges were working including my Oil (Druck) Pressure gauge, which I really like. Unfortunately, my secondary mechanic was working on my center console wiring and somehow screwed up my Oil (Druck) Pressure gauge on my dash. This is a combo Oil Pressure and Oil temp gauges. Now when I turn on my car the Oil (Druck) Pressure Gauge reads 5. I've since had my wiring redone correctly, but the Druck Pressure Gauge still reads at 5. My ace mechanic seems to believe the gauge was damaged or shorted out. Can this be fixed or do I need a new gauge?

Do you have a double pole sender? One wire should be for the gauge and the other for the warning light. Gauges rarely go bad, usually wiring or sender is the culprit.

Pressure gauge pegging at 5 usually means bad wiring. Check that that wires are connected properly and that your ground is good.

Actually, is it reading at 5, or is the gauge pegged at the top (which is probably above 5)? Does it do this only when the engine is running, or even when the key is on (engine not running)?

When I turn the key on it tops out just above 5 and stays there until I turn the key off. What's troubling about this is my primary mechanic was fixing some botched wiring by my secondary mechanic. My primary is truly a German car specialist and loves the 914 (go figure). I'm pretty confident in his work. He put an '82 3.0 in my 1976 911 and it was a thing of beauty. He's not perfect, but certainly talented.
This is why I'm on to the forum. I was wondering if anyone else experienced this problem with the Druck pressure gauge. Thank you for your advice. Dan Actually, is it reading at 5, or is the gauge pegged at the top (which is probably above 5)? Does it do this only when the engine is running, or even when the key is on (engine not running)? |
