Ok, I bought a 1971 1.7L in Illinois and started home to Wicconsin. It started a little slow the idle jumped up and down. Once it warmed up it ran great, the tranny only let me hit reverse,4th and 5th (I think) maybe 2nd and 3rd
It spurted at high rpm after about 30 miles or so.
I put new gas in with Lucas additives and it seems to have helped but it occasionally back fires
First job is rebuild tranny

The first thing you should do is check all of the bushings on the gear shift linkage, from the base of the shift lever to the transmission. When these fail and disintegrate there will be so much play that you cannot find the gears while shifting.
