Pretty nice 3.6 conversion with a very sporty drive video that has lots of people gaga.
https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1971-porsche-914-6-9/ I find it interesting how some cars (usually very well presented) catch everyones imagination on that site and generate interest and often big $. This is one of them. In spite of the current societal woes, BAT still seems very much a sellers marketplace. Good luck to seller. |

Now at $97,914 with nine bids and 32 minutes to go…
I remember being amazed by the $57,000~ price for a six conversion on BaT, but this is a whole 'nuther league… |

If the seller actually wanted to sell the car (which is unclear, and I am surprised BaT allowed a reserve higher than $103k on a six conversion), this was all the money imo. And then some. Paul's amazing Excellence Project 3.6 didn't sell for nearly that and that was my favorite ultimate six conversion!! Just my opinion, but I think Paul's car was superior to this 914. There are other 914-6 hot rods and six conversions that went for less and were better, IMO. I can think of several. But that was at the time of those sales. What is interesting here is that it looks like more than one person was willing to pay $90-104k for a six conversion. The GTS Classics seats (had those, and don't see them as seats for a $100k car), the non-GT rockers, the flat pads at the tops of the doors, the B+B heat exchangers, the questions raised here about the rust-proofing (I'd want to know more), the Weltmeister ARB (hey, I've got one…but it is a cheap piece), the waves in the paint in one of the photos. All nit picks on what look like a very nice car, but a 473 car with a $100+K reserve on a public auction to maximize price opens itself up to the peanut gallery. I don't think an expectation of perfection (whatever that is) was the point here. Fun was, and the car looks like that and more. But "cost to build" for a hot rod rarely leads to price paid by someone else (unless that taste finds broad appeal). In this case, the auction was looking good to bring nearly 2x the highest price I've seen paid for a six conversion. I'd chalk that up to a) allure of big engine in small car, b) color, c) fabulous photos, d) that video, e) changing perceptions about the 914, and f) other influences. In this market, $104k sure seemed like all the money for a hot rod six conversion—and would have set a precedent (whether or not it set a trend). Yes, people will spend far more (and have) on their six conversion, but that's a very different thing to buying one already built. |

Yes, people will spend far more (and have) on their six conversion, but that's a very different thing to buying one already built. Paul called me and told me the price he was willing to sell at and I was stunned. I guess it’s been a few years and there has been some upward price pressure. But, I told Paul it was worth at least $20K more to the right buyer. Paul is a guy who has been very careful with financial decisions and I think this is a number he had in his head that would work. I’m not surprised that this car went to $103,914. What does surprise me is that the seller was looking for even more. Makes me ponder selling mine though... |
