Have a 1973 914 that someone installed an electric rear trunk release. It was always a problem; you had to energize the solenoid by the pushbutton and while energized push down on the trunk lid. Now it does not operate at all; no sound from the solenoid when the pushbutton is depressed. Is there a way to open the rear trunk lid manually?

hold the lid down while someone pushes the button to see if it will spring then if not but power directly to the wire (should find it in the engine compartment). Usually it is because the hinge pivot bolts need lubrication and or the rear catch and latch need lubrication. If the plunger is not seated into the solenoid far enough, the electromagnet will not grab it. Other than that the easiest way is to drill a very small hold in the middle of the "S" and insert a welding rod to trip the lower catch
