It looks like some kind of nylon or plastic roller. I found it inside the door of a 71 914. I'm guessing it has something to do with the mechanism that rolls the window up and down.
Where does it go?   |

It's the early window regulator button that is known to crumble just like yours. It presses on and holds the regulator in the track -- otherwise it'll pop out.
