I put this together for one of our 914World members. It slides into the ashtray rails, no fasteners or drilling holes required.

Disclaimer:

1) Designed for 52mm VDO gauges only. The two gauges shown have different depths, though either gauge will work on either side, I have no knowledge if VDO has built gauges with different depths or stud spacing other than these two. The voltmeter is the deeper gauge and has a body depth of 34mm.

2) Pictured on a '72 model. I assume ashtray's & rails are the same for all years but I don't know that with certainty.

Do your own diligence.

Peace, Ron

So I was the member that worked with RTz (Ron) on this. I received the prototype today. A LOT more complex than I had thought, but it does check all the boxes:

Easy install (in place of the ash tray) with no modifications.
Access to the back of the gauges when pulled out for lights/wiring
Fits standard VDO gauges
Pretty close match to dash

I tried to get some detail pictures of the design, not sure if tilting the gauges would be an option if retaining the threaded studs. Have to mount mine in the car to be sure, but I don't think viewing will be an issue.
