The previous owner told us the hell hole and longs had been done and he seemed like an honest car guy. So that was dumb and naive of me. It was clear that a bunch of work had been done around the hell hole, which looked good from the engine bay. When we got it home and on the lift we were faced with a rusted out lower firewall.
Ordered a firewall repair panel. We pulled the engine today and cut out the lower firewall and it’s pretty ugly. ![]() |

Over the past couple of weeks of winter; Sorted out the electrical gremlins, welded bungs in the exhaust, hooked up the Wide Band O2 gauge and got the Webers synched at idle.
Milestone today, went to the MA DMV and got plates for the 914. I dread going to the DMV, but we lucked out today and got the plates within 30 minutes with no nonsense. It was cold enough today that the roads were dry, so we slapped on the plates and went down the road. (My first time driving a 914.) The O2 guage was showing really lean ( 16.5 AFR) and the engine had no pep, so we made it a really short ride. Ordered some bigger jets. Was running 115 main, ordered 130 based on a quick calculation of flow needed. The idle was lean too, so ordered 55s to replace the 50 idle jets. The transmission didn’t like downshifting into 1st when the car was moving, is that normal for these cars? Attached image(s) ![]() ![]() |
