The very early history of the car is interesting and rather cloudy:
"Initial sale: dealer PO = Portugal no options The Car was initially ordered by Portuguese Porsche Importer and distributor; Messrs AS Motors Sociedade, but was never accepted by the distributor. The car was deemed surplus to the needs of the Porsche Factory on October 1st 1970 and the sale authorized to the public. At this time, there are no known records or documents as to what the Porsche Factory did with this particular 914/6 from April 1970 until October 1970, nor from then until June 26th, 1971 When the Factory invoiced the car to Porsche/Audi Pacific for delivery to Bozzani Porsche-Audi Inc. of Monrovia, California. Bozzani’s Race and Sales Team Managers, Ritchie Ginther and Allan Johnson wrote a multi-page deficiency report to PORSCHE-AUDI of America that was processed through the Porsche Client Services Department in Germany. The report cited use and wear not commensurate with a new “un-raced” vehicle. At the time the report was written the mileage indicated less than 50kms. Johnson later related by phone on December 2nd and 10th, 2003 that upon arrival and inspection the car had clearly been tracked and possibly raced. There were scuffs on the floor pan and stone chips on the rocker, front valence, and all four wheel-arches indicating high speed on track use. The car had been purchased as a new “Race Car” without warranty or guarantee and the Porsche Factory would not compensate the distributor / selling dealer especially as the car was now nearly two years old. We can surmise that in the period between 1970 04 to 1971 06 the race department at Porsche converted the car to FIA Group 4 “GT” specifications. The original 901/36 motor became a 901/26 motor. Also the fender flares were added along with the GT suspension and racing Fuchs. According to Alan Johnson, it appears that the race department put the car to good use during the period. Final sale: Invoiced June 26th, 1971 Port of Entry: UA = Port of Los Angeles in San Pedro, CA Distributor: Porsche/Audi Pacific a Division of VW Pacific, Inc., Culver City, CA Dealer: Bozzani Porsche/Audi Inc., Monrovia, CA In August of 1971 it was delivered to Bozzani Porsche-Audi Inc. of Monrovia, California. Alan Johnson then advertised the car in Auto Week/Competition Press in October - November of 1971. Charles W Grimes II of Tulsa, OK purchased the car Feb 10, 1972 Howard B De Haven of Tulsa, OK purchased the car August 22, 1985 upon the death of Charles Grimes William D Noon of San Diego, CA purchased the car Nov 11,2003 "Symbolic Motor Car Company". http://www.symbolicmotors.com Frank Gallogly of Lime Rock, CT purchased the car 2007" -------------------------------------------------------------------------- So it appears that the car was never delivered to Portugal as intended, and at the time was just a stock 914/6. After the failed delivery it was converted to GT specifications at the Factory and used as a test mule. This was documented by Bozzani upon delivery. |
