are the 1.7s really pokey or what? Is it worth the gas savings?

i had a 1,7 and it was quick enough when driven well. the displacement is down a bit but it also had the highest compression out of the box of any 914. as a result of its "orphan stepchild" status they are often available at relative discount prices.
and you can always go bigger - or 6 - or V8 - or whatever - later. and they can be very efficient. if you have a lot of distance driving to do - well - it's $2/gal pretty much everywhere, and it all adds up ... |
