I have a 1.7L (as one can see below).
It is a gas sipper without a doubt.
My odometer does not work, my speedometer does not work but the"low fuel idiot light" operates.
On the "backroads" I like to drive here in Arizona, one can easily find themselves 100 miles from the nearest gas station, so I do have a good idea of my fuel usage.
That "idiot light" would not help much so far out into the desert here.
That being said (well, typed, really), one can get 30 miles to the gallon without even trying, 35 mpg on the interstate if it is fairly flat, although I avoid interstate highways whenever possible (["all you see on the interstate is interstate"] from the movie Planes, Trains and Automobiles).
I believe the "low power" of the 1.7L has made me, perhaps, a better driver.
One must be in the correct gear at the correct time to use the "power band" of this "little" motor.
I just saw an ad for a new (read here expensive) "hybrid" car touting "THIRTY MILES TO THE GALLON, CITY".
Not really a "breakthrough", I think.
